Stephen King talks here about character, plot, notebooks, ideas, process and all sorts of things. He gives some brilliant advice that is perhaps slightly different to what you might hear elsewhere.

I put this together to help people with their creative writing, to inspire different ways of planning, development. drafting and editing. Also for inspiration and to give us all something to aspire to. This is perfect for beginners to creative writing, those looking for help via lessons or lectures.

So sit back and listen to the wonderful, refreshing and amazing Stephen King.

Thanks for watching. If you're interested in learning more about creative writing and short stories, follow this link to a special offer on my current Udemy course....

Editors want to be sucked into a story, and they can usually tell after just a few lines if that's likely to happen. Writers and editors Victor Dwyer and Charlotte Gill were at The Banff Centre as the Literary Journalism program's editors. They sat down with Ian Brown to talk about modern writing in 2014.

ONE THING: With the last one, I didn't mean that you have to get a degree in writing or anything like that, just that if you love writing it's okay to believe in yourself! ALSO: I have gotten around fifty comments on this video saying that I misinterpreted the advice "write what you know", and that it is meant to mean "research before you write" rather than "write about your experience." As multiple sources and people have expressed this advice to me, research is not what they were encouraging, but writing about my own personal experience as this was considered easier and more comfortable. I agree that good research is very important, but the way the phrase "write what you know" has been expressed to me over the years, it had nothing to do with researching and getting to know your subject.

What makes a good horror story? Hideous monsters and fountains of blood might seem like a good place to start, but as horror author H.P. Lovecraft wrote, “The oldest and strongest kind of fear is fear of the unknown.” Writers harness that fear not by revealing horrors, but by leaving the audience hanging in a state of suspense. Victoria Smith gives some tips for adding suspense to your writing.

Welcome back to engVid. Here we are with a writing lesson. We are looking at the skill of showing, not telling, and it's going to transform your writing as long as you put it into practice afterwards. "Show, not tell. What's he talking about?"

When we're writing we want to avoid simple statements that don't really add any description or flavour. For example: "The man was stressed." [Snores] Boring. Instead, I want you to paint a picture, I really want you to describe the man is stressed without telling me that he is. So how can you do that? We're kind of trying to avoid this word, and describe it instead. So what's he doing? "The man was fidgeting. Ah, he's fidgeting. He's so stressed, he...

This is a slightly random Q&A with Neil Gaiman which explores his thoughts on ideas, writing, publishing and robots.

With questions and answers from a number of different interviews, Neil Gaiman talks eloquently and entertainingly on a number of subjects.

He starts by tackling the question all writers hate; where do you get your ideas from? He jokes about this first but then explains why this is, and why this is such a difficult question for writers, before coming up with a very simple answer and making everyone laugh.

He then answers couple of questions from slips of paper sent in by fans. Do you believe in what you write or is it all complete fiction for you? Then a question about whether the fantasy genre might go out of fashion. He talks about publishing then, and how these things work, and answers very honestly about its fashions and trends.

He's then asked whether robots might take over the world; possibly his most entertaining...

http://www.engvid.com The paragraph is the most important unit of a well-written essay. The paragraph has a specific structure and standards that make it effective and enjoyable to read. In this writing lesson we will look at how to construct good paragraphs and improve writing with better flow and clarity. After the lesson, take the quiz: http://www.engvid.com/writing-skills-paragraph/

TRANSCRIPT

Hi, welcome again to www.engvid.com. I'm Adam. Today's lesson is about the paragraph. It's a writing lesson, and I want to show people what a paragraph is and how to construct one, what to do, what not to do so you can write very clear, very tight paragraphs. This is especially important for IELTS, TOEFL, SAT students but everybody has to follow the exact same rules. Now before I even begin, I must say that I'm talking mostly about academic writing or even business writing. Creative writing like novels or short stories, anything fiction, you can do anything you want. Only always remember: somebody has to read what you wrote so it has to be clear. But academic essays, for example, certain rules you have to follow; you have to be very careful about them. So let's begin.

In terms of like the actual way a paragraph looks: you have to indent or skip a line....

The steely stare of the bitter and lone writer need not be in vane! Why struggle to write a hero when you can write an antihero instead? Antiheroes are way cooler which means a writer can put even less effort into them than other characters! Even better, maturity is optional when writing an antihero. The best antiheroes are the ones that conform to what a 13 year old thinks is cool! A writer can even skimp on dialog when it comes to writing an antihero! So dial your self-awareness back and get ready to brood up a storm as we write an antihero. Just be careful to not cut yourself on all the edginess. Rocky is my favorite movie of all time. In this episode, I take a look at how the film makes its hero so likable and empathetic. I think part of the reason is that the film takes its time to get to the main plot, and focuses heavily on character for nearly a full hour. This goes against some common writing advice in Hollywood, specifically, the beat sheet created by Blake Snyder in his influential book, Save The Cat.

An idea I didn't get to in the video is this: the movie takes its time to get to the "catalyst" because it's engaging the audience with a dynamic story in the first hour, except that the story isn't happening to Rocky. It's happening to Adrian. She's the one who has someone barge into her life, force her to go on an "adventure" that she initially declines, and undergo a character change.

In a modern movie, these two plot lines would probably play...

In this brand-new talk, introduced by Lord Melvyn Bragg, Steven argues that style still matters: in communicating effectively, in enhancing the spread of ideas, in earning a reader’s trust and, not least, in adding beauty to the world.

Steven Pinker is an experimental psychologist and one of the world’s foremost writers on language, mind, and human nature. He is Professor in the Department of Psychology at Harvard University and conducts research on language and cognition but also writes for publications such as the New York Times, Time, and is the author of many books, including The Language Instinct and How the Mind Works.

What would some of the greatest writers of our time advise their younger peers? Find out here where Jonathan Franzen, Ngũgĩ wa Thiong’o, Richard Ford, Umberto Eco and seven others share their thoughts on how to make it as a writer.

“Have fun … if you’re having fun there’s a good chance that the reader will too,” is American Jonathan Franzen’s (b. 1959) most important piece of advice.

Swedish playwright Lars Norén (b. 1944) argues that writing isn’t about desire, but about necessity: “… the disappointments and the efforts are so tough that you must have an inner conviction that this is what you want.”

“Write, write, write and write again, and you will get it right.” Such is the key piece of advice from Kenyan writer Ngũgĩ wa Thiong’o (b. 1938).

American Lydia Davis (b.1947) emphasizes how important it is accept that writing can be chaotic and to put effort into making the text flow: “You learn from models, you study them, you analyse them very closely … You pick it apart.”

Remember what excited you when you were at your most impressionable, says Icelandic Sjón (b. 1962), who also urges young writers not to be embarrassed by what initially inspired you: “All of us come to culture...

For John Irving, the need for a daily ration of solitude was his strongest "pre-writing" moment as a child.

Transcript:
I supposed I had a number of what I might call pre-writing moments as a kid. I recognized at a pretty early age, certainly I was pre-teens, I noticed that the school day was enough of a day to spend with my friends. I seemed to have a need to want to be alone.

Even before I started making almost landscape notes in a journal, even before I started keeping a journal, which happened to me when I was fourteen, even before then I had a need to come home from school by myself and to be in a room by myself or in my grandmother's garden by myself.

I guess the earliest sign was how much I liked being alone, how much I actually needed to be alone, the way you need, or I need, exercise or food or a certain amount of sleep. There was that desire to be, and a comfort, at being alone.
