There are things you want to do in the gym like workout hard, smart and try to progressively overload at all opportunities. Then, there are the things that you never ever want to do in a gym. In this video, I’m going to show you the 10 worst things you can do in a gym to hopefully make sure that you are not one of the ones that winds up doing these. We all know, there are far too many people out there in gyms across the World doing them already.

So what are the top ten gym sins? First, you have to pick up your dumbbells. Simply being lazy and leaving your dumbbells strewn across the gym floor is not only discourteous but it’s a downright fire hazard. Imagine if a fire broke out in your gym? The real danger might not even be the flames but your likelihood to face plant on the way out the door when you trip over one of those random 50’s.

14. Don’t train through the pain- Even though this sounds obvious, you might be surprised as to how many people work out at the gym when they’re feeling under the weather or hurt themselves. It’s important to listen to what your body is telling you! If you sprained an ankle or threw out your back during your routine, immediately stop what you’re doing, identify the pain and treat it. Working out when you’re in pain does more damage than good. This includes working out when you have a cold or have a fever. You might think hitting the gym might be a good remedy to help yourself feel better, but in fact, it might have the opposite effect. Working out can deplete the little energy you already have. Plus you don’t want to spread your cold or any germs on the exercise equipment either. Your best option is to stay at home and wait until you’re feeling better to tackle any workouts. There’s nothing wrong with missing a day or two, especially since your body needs time to recover.

Any exercise can become the worst exercise if you perform it incorrectly. That said, certain exercises deserve the title of the "worst exercise ever" simply because of the low reward, high risk nature of it. In this video, I show 5 of the worst exercises for building muscle and what you can do instead.

Each of the exercises listed in this video is included because of the high risk low reward that it offers. As a physical therapist and strength coach for professional athletes, I have to know where to draw the line between the two. If a quarterback or pitcher of mine wants to do max overhead snatches, I'm going to tell them it's a bad idea. Why? Because there are other ways to train upper body explosiveness without jeopardizing their career on one fatigued or poorly performed rep.

It's Mike Chang and today I want to talk about 3 common mistakes that beginners make. The truth is, beginners make mistakes and even though I've mentioned these mistakes in videos before, it is always good to remind yourself to do things right. Alright, let's talk about these mistakes and how avoiding them can help you get the muscular body you've always wanted.

Video breakdown

0:30 #1 I made this mistake, so don't feel alone. Working out too long! When you first start working out, your body is not ready to handle a ton of stress and you can burn muscle. So what you need to do is workout from 30-60 minutes for about 3-6 months.

2:35 #2 Doing too many isolation movements. And this makes it hard to put on muscle, because you are isolating muscles too much and shaping more than building. You want the majority of your exercises to be compound movements. The best thing to do isolation movements last.

5:20 #3 Copying someones routine too much, so doing exactly what they do. Although it's a good way to get going, it is only going to help you out for about 3 months. Remember, you want the workouts to help your weak points... not your partners. So...

Please keep in mind that the focus of my channel is improving body composition - building muscle and reducing body fat (using sustainable approaches).
