Walking down the street with James Spann, the star weather forecaster and tornado expert for Birmingham’s ABC 33/40, is quite the experience. Despite changing TV watching patterns fueled by Netflix and Youtube, the meteorologist continues to get recognized left and right, by people young and old. And that makes sense. Alabama is known for its tornadoes, and James Spann’s coverage is widely thought to be some of the best tornado coverage in the U.S.

Spann also makes a point of visiting local schools to give talks to students about the weather. So, for some Alabamians, Spann fandom started in the first grade — and never stopped.

Still, despite Spann’s love of science and science communication, there’s one thing that he won’t talk about on the air: climate change.

“They hire me here to forecast the weather. They didn't hire me as a climatologist to discuss these things,” Spann told VICE News Tonight during a conversation in the ABC 33/40 studio.

But his refusal to talk about climate change goes beyond what he perceives as the limits of his job. “Natural variability in my opinion is still the primary driver — and all of a sudden you become a sinner.” In other words, Spann doesn’t think humans are the main cause...

After more than 16 years of war, Afghan civilians live each day under constant threat, as U.S. forces and the Afghan government struggle to secure the country.

Despite hundreds of billions of dollars spent on the war since 2001, U.S. goals are far from within reach. Meanwhile, the Taliban has never been stronger, controlling more land than ever before and establishing footholds in nearly every province in Afghanistan.

READ: U.S. troops will face the deadliest Taliban yet

President Donald Trump has vowed to undo some of the terror group’s grip on the country and force it back to the negotiating table. But his new strategy, which centers on thousands of additional U.S. troops and an intensification of airstrikes, has only just begun to produce gains.

The Taliban, facing renewed pressure, have increased terror attacks on major cities, striking at the heart of Kabul recently, in a series of devastating attacks that left hundreds of civilians dead in the span of a week.

Six years of civil war has left most of Syria, a country once known for its ancient cities, in ruins.

On the battlefield, Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad’s forces continue to fight a loose, and increasingly diminished collection of anti-government rebels. While in the country’s east, coalition forces have crippled a once fearsome ISIS, driving the group from its strongholds.

War continues to rattle much of the country, and peace remains a notion far off in the distance, but one thing has come into focus with each passing day: Assad isn’t going anywhere.

To see what life is like under Assad’s rule, VICE New sent Isobel Yeung to Syria just as the final bombs were falling over Aleppo.

In Aceh, Sharia rules all. In this Indonesian province, hardliners began enforcing Islamic law in the wake of the devastating 2004 tsunami that killed more than 200,000 people, telling the survivors that it was the wrath of God punishing them for their sins. Today, Sharia police roam the streets busting gamblers, drinkers, and adulterers, and sending them off to be publicly caned by "executioners."

VICE founder Suroosh Alvi travels to Aceh and across Indonesia, the world's most populous Muslim country, to experience Sharia up close and investigate its correlation to terrorism, as well as meet those who are fighting back against it.

Obesity is now the biggest health threat facing Kuwait — and the country's obsession with American fast food could be to blame.

The very first McDonald's restaurant appeared in Kuwait on a U.S. military base set up to support the 1991 invasion of Iraq. Since then, the industry has rapidly expanded — there are now hundreds of U.S. fast food restaurants in Kuwait and as a result, the country has become one of the most obese nations on the planet.

"The begining of fast food, I would say it is part of the Americanization of the culture here." Dr. Mohsen Bagnied, a professor at the American University of Kuwait told VICE News. Now, Kuwait has roughly double the percentage of diabetic adults than the U.S.

The fast food industry isn't just operating in the Middle East. American Fast food brands populate more than 100 countries around the world, occupying six continents. And the global fast food industry is projected to be worth over $600 billion by 2019.

VICE's Gianna Toboni travels to Kuwait to witness the health effects on a country deep in the throes of an unlikely obsession with U.S. fast food.

It comes as no surprise that a time when white supremacist groups have gained increased public notoriety and the President has disparaged African nations as “shitholes," many black Americans are feeling isolated and unsafe in communities or workplaces.

Many of them are turning those frustrations into acts of self-preservation, and are spending significant money to get outside of the country and away from the people who make them feel that way.

Since the election of President Trump, at least 5 black-owned trip organizations have told VICE News that they’ve experienced upticks in interest from clients eager to get out of the United States.

VICE News followed a group of women to the Women of Color Healing Retreat in Puerto Viejo, Costa Rica; a travel experience that emphasized yoga, vegan food, political education seminars, and specifcally banned white people.

This is the November 29, 2017, FULL EPISODE of VICE News Tonight on HBO.

Immigrants from India hold by far the largest number of H-1Bs--temporary visas for skilled workers. For many, that temporary status has become a way of life. No matter how long they’ve lived in the United States, most have no hope of getting a green card anytime soon, if ever.

After President Trump retweeted the British far-right nationalist, he tweeted out an endzone dance about NBC’s firing of Matt Lauer. But people in glass White Houses might not want to throw stones.

VICE News interviews missile expert Jeffrey Lewis for latest reaction following DPRK ballistic missile launch.

Will Ferrell addresses the true, false, and straight up weird things the internet has written about him, in an inaugural pilot episode of ‘Vicepedia’.

2:52 What do Americans think about the government shutdown, and what do they think honest Abe Lincoln would say about it? VICE News travels to the (locked) front door of Lincoln’s house to find out.

9:05 Back in 2013, the last time we shut the government down, essential personnel who ended up working but not getting paid, sued the federal government. The lawyer in the case sits down with VICE News to talk over the situation and the reason why the original clients brought the lawsuit: to show how dumb it is to shutdown the government.

17:21 VICE News went to speak with AUL's President and CEO, Catherine Glenn Foster, about how her organization has been able to close so many clinics using this book.

21:33 About 60 people showed up for the Pinedale, Wyoming, Women’s March on Saturday. Last year, the same march drew about 100 demonstrators. VICE News talks to the organizer about the smaller turnout and what it’s like to support the movement in a deep red state.

This is the January 16, 2018 FULL EPISODE of VICE News Tonight on HBO.

3:55 VICE News discovered Missouri governor Greitens has plenty of good reasons to hide from voters—and that this scandal barely makes the list.

10:45 Attorney General Jeff Sessions issued a memo on January 4th telling federal prosecutors that they’re free to go after marijuana-related crimes, even in states that have legalized weed. The memo reversed an Obama policy that tried to alleviate the conflict between federal laws and state-level initiatives… But members of Congress are now moving to defend those initiatives.

13:59 ICE’s recent sweep of nearly 100 7-Eleven stores across the country marked a step forward in the Trump administration’s effort to deter businesses from hiring undocumented workers. Despite that, only 21 people were arrested, representing a large commitment of resources for comparatively little gain.

17:14 To evaluate just how the EPA has been doing in Trump and Pruitt’s first year, we gathered around a campfire with five former employees who departed the agency in 2017, to find out what’s really going on inside.

23: 18 In her third Music Critic, Regina Spektor reviews new songs of Rick Springfield and more.

3:56 Since the president helpfully put them back in the news, VICE News explores why not earmarks and interviews one of the republican members of congress who has been pushing bringing them back.

7:39 The US-Mexico border has the fourth highest migrant fatalities in the world. One group of volunteers, who call themselves the Armadillos, travel to the desert up to two times a month to search for missing migrants before it’s too late.

14:08 Germans have been subjecting themselves to a massive social media experiment, in the form of a Merkel backed law that requires companies to delete posts that violate Germany’s strict policies against hate speech and other illegal speech—defined as anything from inciting violence to disparaging religious groups.

16:17 VICE News hits the road with Madison Rising, a patriotic post grunge band with hits such as 'Where was the media then?" and "Right to bear." We follow the band and it's unlikely management team as it heads from rehearsal in NY to a biker rally in Texas.

3:43 This morning, President Trump took a sledgehammer to his own party’s best shot at avoiding a government shutdown: nixing the idea of an extension of the Children’s Health Insurance Program … the main bargaining chip that Congressional Republicans were planning on using.

6:37 2017 has been a pivotal year for women. Since the election of Donald Trump for president, the momentum for women to speak out has been on the rise. VICE News details the rise of the #metoo movement and the surge of female candidates signing up to run for office.

8:28 Last week, Montecito, California saw destructive mudslides that killed at least 20 people and damaged hundreds of home. The city now faces a daunting cleanup with no end in sight. VICE News follows along as dump trucks attempt to clean up the city by hauling away the dirt to a nearby beach town.

9:20 In the largest examination of police shootings to date, VICE News spent nine months gathering data from the fifty largest police departments in the country — 4,000 officer-involved shootings in total, one-third of which were fatal.

12:46 Should immigrants facing deportation have guaranteed, publicly-funded access to a lawyer? Earlier this month, an NYC-based non-profit announced a new grant program, the SAFE Cities Network, which supplements public money for deportation defense — with the condition that access is universal.

In the last 15 years, one in three Detroit properties have been foreclosed on. When most people think of foreclosure, they think of people who can’t afford to pay off their mortgages.

But in Detroit, it’s often the result of people struggling to pay their property taxes. One big reason is that, in the years after the Great Recession, the city went bankrupt and failed to lower property assessments far enough to account for the impact of the housing crisis. While the value of residents’ homes fell, their taxes remained inordinately high, and tens of thousands of people fell so far behind on their inflated tax bills that the county seized their homes and sold them off at annual auctions.

In recent years, the city and county have lowered assessments and offered reduced interest rates to some homeowners. But they have no plans to stop punishing those who were overcharged in the past.

VICE News followed this year’s tax foreclosure auction and investigated how the county financially benefits from the process. As Detroit touts its comeback and celebrates its success in climbing out of the largest municipal bankruptcy in American history, many of the city’s residents remain on the brink of displacement.

Over the past 20 years, Franco Loja and Arjan Roskam, known as the "Kings of Cannabis," have made millions of dollars scouring the world for unique strains of weed to breed and then sell.

Now, they've turned their sights on Equatorial Africa, specifically the Democratic Republic of the Congo, as their next gold mine — and a way to revolutionize the cannabis industry.

"Equatorial Africa is one the best preserved because of the wars, the lack of infrastructure, political unrest. All these situations created isolation there," Loja explained. "So that's where we're going."

Loja and Roskam built their global powerhouse on inbred strains of cannabis called "landraces" that they've collected from all over the world — Argentina, Australia, and Brazil, just to name a few spots. Without these strains, the duo's various breeding enterprises, Amsterdam coffeeshops, and even distribution centers wouldn't exist.

VICE News met up with the “Kings of Cannabis” for a trip to the Democratic Republic of the Congo to hunt for one of the rarest species of Cannabis yet, the original Congolese landrace.
