This is the May 14, 2018 FULL EPISODE of VICE News Tonight on HBO.

2:25 The U.S. embassy formally moves to Jerusalem from Tel Aviv, VICE News looks at the reaction from Palestinians in Gaza.

7:40 Then, Shane Smith goes to the Israeli side of the border where a very different scene was taking place.

11:29 Iraqis went to the polls Saturday for the first time since driving out ISIS. Iraqi voters turned to a coalition headed up by an old adversary of the United States, the populist Shia cleric Muqtada al-Sadr. An al-Sadr-led government could speed up the removal of U.S. forces.

13:40 Seattle is proposing that companies grossing more than $20 million a year pay a new tax of $500 per employee. Its main target is a company that a lot of people blame for driving inequality in the city in the first place: Amazon.

17:42 Hector Barajas runs the Deported Veterans Support House, just over the border in Tijuana. He opened the place in 2013 and calls it the ‘Bunker.’ Nobody knows how many U.S. veterans have been deported. The government doesn't track that number.

A small group of people in Johnston County NC are investigating their state’s role in the CIA's torture and rendition program. Last fall, they had a series of public hearings on the subject and on May 7th they're planning to meet with their commissioners in an effort to compel their county's very conservative board of commissioners to issue a ban on the use of public resources for rendition or torture, and to publicly acknowledge what they found: that a CIA contractor called Aero operating out of the local county airport, handled some 80% of rendition flights between September 2001 and March 2004.

Iraq’s incumbent Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi was hoping the country’s recent defeat of ISIS would be enough to secure his grip on power for another term. But frustration over Iran’s increasing influence in the country — and accusations of widespread political corruption — ultimately sunk his reelection bid.

He was unseated by a coalition led by Muqtada al-Sadr, an anti-American Shia cleric who once oversaw uprisings against U.S. troops. Al-Sadr’s coalition ran on a fiercely nationalist campaign that promised to crack down on corruption and disentangle Iraq from decades of foreign influence, specifically from the U.S. and Iran.

But al-Sadr's newly empowered coalition will face the same pressing test that plagued his predecessor: securing and stabilizing the country months after ISIS’s defeat. The diminished terror group isn’t going to make it easy. ISIS continues to threaten civilians, most recently releasing an audio message, declaring all who voted to be infidels and promising to carry out attacks on polling day.

VICE News visited the eastern half of Mosul to see how the city was coping with the lingering ISIS threat amid Iraq’s high stakes election season.

After more than 16 years of war, Afghan civilians live each day under constant threat, as U.S. forces and the Afghan government struggle to secure the country.

Despite hundreds of billions of dollars spent on the war since 2001, U.S. goals are far from within reach. Meanwhile, the Taliban has never been stronger, controlling more land than ever before and establishing footholds in nearly every province in Afghanistan.

President Donald Trump has vowed to undo some of the terror group’s grip on the country and force it back to the negotiating table. But his new strategy, which centers on thousands of additional U.S. troops and an intensification of airstrikes, has only just begun to produce gains.

The Taliban, facing renewed pressure, have increased terror attacks on major cities, striking at the heart of Kabul recently, in a series of devastating attacks that left hundreds of civilians dead in the span of a week.

VICE’s Ben Anderson travelled to Afghanistan in October 2016 as the Taliban were on the verge of retaking Helmand Province, once a crucial territory in the U.S. war. Reconnecting with families he’d visited years earlier, he saw just how little has been done to contain the Taliban’s influence across the country’s rural...

As a major stronghold of ISIS in its brutal sweep across Iraq, the city of Mosul has been central in the war to defeat the terror group.

Iraqi forces began their campaign to crush ISIS in October 2016 just outside of Erbil, with a coalition of Kurdish peshmerga forces, and Western advisory allies. It was a long and arduous process of slowly advancing first from town to town along the Nineveh plains toward the city and then from block to block as they worked to liberate sectors of the city.

VICE’s Aris Roussinos embedded with Iraqi forces as they began the campaign to retake Mosul.

It's been 12 years since Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, the alleged 9/11 mastermind, arrived at the Guantánamo Bay Detention Center off Cuba. There've been 29 rounds of pre-trial hearings, costing around $6 billion so far, according to Department of Defense estimates. And there's still no date in sight for the trial.

What's taking so long? VICE News visited Mohammed's defense team in Guantánamo Bay to see why the so-called trial of the century is still so far off.

David Nevin, who heads the team defending Mohammed, believes that protecting those who took part in the torture program at the U.S. detention facility has become more important in this case than bringing those accused of plotting 9/11 to justice.

Khalid Sheikh Mohammed was subjected to waterboarding and ”rectal rehydration,” among other things, during the three and a half years he was in CIA custody before being transferred to Gitmo. “It's the reason we're here,” Nevin told VICE News. “The reason we're spending $76,000 a minute is to protect the people who violated all of these domestic and international laws.”

VICE News also spoke to a 9/11 victim's family member who witnessed one round of pre-trial hearings at Guantánamo Bay late last year, coming face to face with...

9:11 Pruitt has already passed a long list of rules and policies that will change the agency’s ability to regulate and fight pollution. VICE News looks at the small policy changes that will make a huge impact at the EPA.

12:10 A 2016 bleaching event significantly damaged one third of the Great Barrier Reef . Scientist Terry Hughes has been studying coral for decades, and he said the Great Barrier Reef is unrecognizable now.

18:37 Benny Carson is 7. His mother wants him to be able to walk home from the bus, through this park, alone, but the Cinnaminson, New Jersey, school board won’t let him. Proponents of free range parenting argue that as the world has gotten safer, kids are no longer allowed to just be kids.

Police in several cities across the U.S. are trying to put a stop to the groups of men waging paintball battles as a part of #PaintballsUpGunsDown — an anti-gun violence campaign police are calling misguided.

Detroit Police Chief James Craig said the #PaintballsUpGunsDown movement has gotten out of control and could backfire if officers mistake a paintball gun for a real firearm.

The grassroots movement first gained traction on social media in early April as a proposed way to resolve conflicts with paint instead of bullets. Since then, participants from Atlanta to Detroit have engaged in full blown paintball wars on city streets, with as many as 50 shooters taking aim at each other at once, hitting innocent bystanders and marking up cars and homes.

Over the last week, police in Detroit started making arrests for destruction of property. Paintballers say they're being targeted for being young and black and that cleaning up paint is a lot better than picking up dead bodies.

VICE News Tonight on HBO presents America First, an in-depth look at President Trump’s unprecedented first year in office, focusing on his two biggest campaign promises: restoring manufacturing jobs and building the border wall.

Correspondents Michael Moynihan and Isobel Yeung travel across the country—and south of the border—to chart the progress of key campaign promises, and meet the voters who rallied behind Trump’s political revolution.

The documentary special features insights from Trump surrogates including political consultant Roger Stone and conservative commentator Ann Coulter. We also hear from key opposition players including Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT).

Undergirding it all is a focus group of Trump voters led by Republican Strategist Frank Luntz. Almost all of the people who voted for Trump in 2016 say he’d still get their vote today. “My biggest surprise in the last year is that many, many Trump voters are as mad at the GOP as they are at the Democrats. It’s Trump versus the world.”

Hamas called for thousands to amass along the border with Israel to denounce the U.S. embassy’s move to Jerusalem — and demand an end to the blockade on Gaza.

Tens of thousands of Gazans answered that call today — and the Israelis responded with overwhelming force. But the more than 50 deaths today could be a reality check, and the body count in the morgue at Gaza City’s main hospital was higher than it’s been since the last war with Israel.

For many here, a decade-long Israeli blockade has made life so hellish, that they’re readily willing to risk their lives and the large turnout for these protests is a victory in itself.

Israel and the Trump Administration have already cut the militant group out of talks on a peace plan — a deal that will reportedly offer up four Jerusalem neighborhoods to the Palestinian Authority. But that means there’s nothing to lose if the violence escalates.

Six years of civil war has left most of Syria, a country once known for its ancient cities, in ruins.

On the battlefield, Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad’s forces continue to fight a loose, and increasingly diminished collection of anti-government rebels. While in the country’s east, coalition forces have crippled a once fearsome ISIS, driving the group from its strongholds.

War continues to rattle much of the country, and peace remains a notion far off in the distance, but one thing has come into focus with each passing day: Assad isn’t going anywhere.

To see what life is like under Assad’s rule, VICE New sent Isobel Yeung to Syria just as the final bombs were falling over Aleppo.

Nigeria may sit atop one of the largest oil reserves in the world, but the majority of the Nigerian people have seen little benefit from the multibillion-dollar industry. The government and global energy companies have been exploiting the resource for years, bringing poverty, pollution, and violence to the Niger Delta. And now the local militias fighting for oil control have made conditions even worse.

Caught in the conflict are Nigerian citizens involved in the illegal oil market simply for survival. Oil theft is rampant, and the booming black market has transnational oil and gas consultants concerned about the effects on global oil markets. The government isn't too happy about it either.

Katie Hill is running for office for the first time. The 30-year-old quit her job managing an organization that advocates for the homeless in Los Angeles, to try to ride the blue wave that is supposedly going to shift Congress in a more democratic direction in November of 2018.

California’s 25th district is the last one that includes LA County that is currently represented by a republican. But the guy who represents it, Congressman Steve Knight, isn’t Katie’s problem yet.

To get to the general election, Hill has to figure out how to pull votes away from two democrats who are campaigning for that seat too. There’s also a third democrat in the race who, at this point, is a non-factor.

Pulling voters in her direction requires money. Lots of it. In California, money takes on added importance because of how expensive it is to run ads in the state. Any campaign, including Hill’s, has to spend an extraordinary amount of time picking up the phone and begging people for money. Hill has gotten pretty good at it, raising more than Bryan Caforio. He’s one of the other democrats in the race and he has a higher name recognition because he’s actually run for office before.

But that push and pull between raising money and actually...

An international team of scientists have accidentally enhanced a plastic eating enzyme in a discovery that could change our relationship with plastic forever. The breakthrough, if scaled up, could lead to plastic being broken down into its original components and formed into plastic items again, removing the need for making more of the material.

With over 1 million plastic bottles sold a minute and at the current rate plastic set to outweigh fish in the oceans by 2050, plastic pollution is an environmental menace that has been dubbed a 'planetary crisis' by the United Nations. Despite the huge challenge,
Professor John McGeehan who headed the research believes the findings could turn the tide, "I think there's been a huge amount of doom and gloom stories around plastics and justifiably because it's a terrible environmental scourge. But this is a story where we've got some hope that we can actually put together."

The research was based on a 2016 discovery in a waste facility in Japan of a bacterium that had evolved to eat plastic. During the teams attempt to understand the how the enzyme evolved they made alterations which inadvertently led to the enzyme eating plastic 20% faster than before.

Back in 2013, VICE debuted Ground Zero: Mali.

VICE got exclusive access to 2013 crisis in Mali. This footage was shot in Gao, Mali, on February 21, 2013. It was basically the first legitimate combat footage to come out of the war there. Normally the French ban journalists from the frontlines and film a sanitized version of the fighting themselves and then distribute it to the media.

Here, VICE production crew made friends with some French soldiers and chatted with them about what they thought about this grueling campaign as well as the greatest threat they face: homemade bombs, aka IEDs.
