Welcome back. This is
lesson two of my series on
articles. If you haven’t
seen the first lesson, you
will find the link to the
full playlist below.
Alright, in this lesson, I
will show you 13 uses of
the definite article –
‘the’. As always, there’s
a quiz at the end to test
your understanding.
Use number one is
something we discussed in
the previous lesson. This
is also the most important
use.
Use 'the' to talk about a
person or thing known to
your listener.
For example, "Julie has a
nine-year-old son. The boy
wants to be an astronaut."
Here, I first say 'a
nine-year old son' because
you don't know him yet.
But once I have introduced
him in the sentence, I
then say 'The boy' because
he is now known to you.
Here's another example:
"Can you answer the
phone?" If I say this to
you, then...

How to use articles 'a', 'an', and 'the' in English? - Basic English Grammar lesson

English articles ("a", "an", and "the") come before nouns. They help to communicate which thing you're talking about, similar to words like "this", "my", and "all". And they're confusing to a lot of English learners.

Articles are really, really hard!

If your native language doesn't use articles, they can be really confusing. The truth is, you might never completely master articles. Most non-native English speakers don't, even know if they're quite fluent and have spoken English for a very long time. That's mostly OK. Mistakes with articles don't usually get in the way of communication. Your listeners or readers will usually be able to figure out what you mean by guessing whether you meant "a thing" or "the thing".
So while you should try to improve your skill with articles, you shouldn't worry much about them. This video lesson by Niharika will clear your basic doubts for using articles correctly.

Uses of ‘being’ – English Grammar Lesson

‘Being’ is the present participle of the verb ‘be’. It is not used very often. In this lesson, you are going to learn the three basic uses of ‘being’.

1. ‘Being’ is used in the continuous tense to talk about a person’s action or behavior:
Example: You are being silly.
Example: He was being naughty.

Note: Do not use ‘being’ to talk about a person’s feeling.
Example: I am being delighted to meet you. (Incorrect)
Example: I am delighted to meet you. (Correct)

2. It is used in the present and past continuous passive voice to show continuity of the action in the present or past.
Example: Dinner is being cooked by mother. (Present continuous passive voice)
Example: A kite was being made by John. (Past continuous passive voice)

3. It replaces ‘as’, ‘because’ and ‘since’:
Example: Being late, he couldn't watch the match. (as he was late, because he was late, since he was late)
Example: Being a friend of the actor, I am often invited to his parties. (As I am a friend, because I am a friend, since I am a friend)

In this lesson, I explain how and when we use "to" before a verb with the "-ing" ending. The use of "to" before an "-ing" verb is not always correct. But it is correct in a particular case to express an emotion or action happening in the present referring to a past or future event. If this sounds complicated, have no fear! It is a simple structure once you understand how it works. And if you do our quiz at http://www.engvid.com/english-grammar-how-to-use-to-before-an-ing-verb/ you will get used to using this concept in no time!

TRANSCRIPT

Hi there. My name is Emma, and in today's video, we are going to talk about something many students wonder about, and that is when we use "to" and "ing" together. Sorry. Okay, so for example... Yeah: "What???" Many students, when they see this, it "poof" their minds; they have no idea: What is this? It goes against all the rules they've learned. So I'm going to explain to you when this happens, and how we can use it. So, let's look at some examples.

This is the most common example of this you will see: "I look forward to meeting you." Notice we have our verb: "look forward", and then we have this little guy, here, "to", and then we also have "ing". Okay? So, in this case, it's very strange. We're going to learn...

Gabby answers another question in this video lesson.

When do you use articles?

Many of you might think that articles in English are difficult, but Gabby is going to make it

really simple for you in this video.

‘The’ is called a Definite Article because we are talking about something specific. We’re talking

about something that we can clearly define.

There are certain words that you will not put after ‘The’.

For example:

‘All you need is love’.

For this expression you don’t need to add ‘The’ because it is referring to love in general.

However, when you say,

‘The love of a mother’

‘The’ is necessary because this is a statement about a specific kind of love. ‘The’ is necessary to

portray the idea clearly.

‘The’ is used when you talk about objects, specific locations,...

Correct Use of The article. Definite article 'the' .

Articles: a, an & the. Learn all about when to use 'a' or 'an' and when and how to use 'the.'

Welcome to English Grammar Spot! This lesson is about
'a', 'an' and 'the'. Otherwise known as articles. Take a look at the following sentences

The man walked right past me.
A giant spider crawled across the ceiling.
An elephant is a large animal.

All the underlined words here are articles. First I am going to show you how and when to use 'a'. We use 'a' before a word that starts
with a constant for example: B, C, D, F, G, H, J , K, L, M, N, P. Q, R, S, T, V, W, X, Y, Z. For example:

A blue bird.
A nice man.
A wonderful dinner.

Hereblue, nice and wonderful all start with consonants. Now I'm going to show you how and when to use 'an'.We use 'an' before a word that starts with a vowel. And the vowels in the English language are
A, E, I, O, U.

For example:
an apple
an egg
an insect.

Now there are some exceptions. The use of 'a' or 'an' depends on the beginning sound so the word might start with a consonant
or a vowel, but we really need to listen to how the word it is pronounced.

For example: hour. We see an 'H' but we hear a...

Hi. James from engVid. Sorry, I was on the train. I want to teach you a lesson about four basic prepositions that we use in English that sometimes get confused, and I understand why, so I'll keep it basic. But because it's basic, it's going to be 80% correct. That's a good thing, that means you can go to the website and learn more from other lessons we have. But just know that sometimes there'll be exceptions, and I may not cover it here today. I'll even give you two exceptions to help you, but why waste time? Let's go to the board.

Transcript:
Hello and welcome. In this
lesson, I will teach you the
seven rules that you need to
know for using articles in
English correctly. Articles are
the words ‘a’, ‘an’, and ‘the’.
There is a final quiz at the
end of the lesson for you to
test your understanding.
OK, the first rule is about
where to use ‘a’ and where to
use ‘an’. So rule number one is
use ‘a’ before a consonant
sound, and ‘an’ before a vowel
sound.
So in all of these words – you
see that they start with a
consonant sound. Cat starts
with /k/, dog
starts with /d/, boy with /b/,
girl with /g/, house with /h/
and tree with /t/.
So we say ‘a cat’, ‘a dog’, ‘a
boy’, ‘a girl’, ‘a house’, ‘a
tree’ etc. Notice that in
natural speech, we don’t say
‘a’, we say ‘uh’ – like ‘a
cat’.

How To Use Get As A Phrasal Verb - This video answers a question on the word, ‘Get’. Join our free email group for English learning at http://gonaturalenglish.com

“Can you please explain the verb, ‘To Get’ as a phrasal verb?’

If you don’t know, a phrasal verb is a verb plus another preposition. In English, we use this a lot.

‘Get’ can be paired up with a lot of prepositions. Here a just a few examples.

‘Get out of the bus’ or ‘Get out of the room’

This means to literally leave a space or location.

You could also say, ‘Get out of’ which means to avoid something. ‘I need to get out of this

‘Get on the train’ This is the opposite of ‘Get out’.

These examples are simple and there is so much more. Learning the phrasal verbs can make it

easier for you to express an idea or to give some instruction.

Hello. This is Gill, here, at www.engvid.com. And today, we're going to have a lesson on the use of the verb "to keep". Okay? It's a verb that's used a lot in English, so it's a very useful word to know, and to know how to use it. And it can actually be used in different ways, in slightly different ways, different meanings. So I'm just going to show you three of those main ways of using the verb "to keep" in this lesson.

Okay. First of all, to explain how "to keep" is different from the verb "to hold". Sometimes people get them confused. "To hold".
