You've just achieved a goal you've been working towards for two years. You did it! Congratulations. Someone asks you: how does it feel? "Kind of anti-climactic, actually," you say. This scenario is quite common among those who have achieved even the highest benchmarks in business, athletics, or art, says Adam Alter, and it's because the goal setting process is broken. With long-term goals particularly, you spend the large majority of the time in a failure state, awaiting what could be a mere second of success down the track. This can be a hollow and unrewarding process. Alter suggests swapping quantitative goals (I will write 1,000 words of my novel per day. I will run 1km further every week) for qualitative systems—like writing every morning with no word target, or running in a new environment each week—that nourish you psychologically, and are independently rewarding each time you do them. Adam Alter is the author of Irresistible: The Rise of Addictive Technology and the Business of Keeping Us Hooked.

In which Jacob Clifford and Adriene Hill teach you about Economic Systems and Macroeconomics. So, economics is basically about choices. We'll look at some of the broadest economic choices when we talk about the difference between planned economies and market economies. We'll get into communism, socialism, command economies, and capitalism. We'll look at how countries choose the kind of system they're going to use (spoiler alert: many end up with mixed economies). We'll also look into how individuals make economic choices.

Bootleg game systems are known for buggy and unlicensed software, weird romhacks, and poor translations, and in this video we'll be trying out three of these knock-off handheld consoles! Some of these rip-off systems are just laughable, but others can be pretty interesting. I hope you enjoy this look at a more unique part of my game collection. Thanks for watching!

'A Sufi story tells of a village of blind men. One day, a new creature arrived. Each of the men grasped one part of it, and declared they knew what it was:
- A snake!
- A rug!
- Columns!
But by only experiencing one part of it – each was wrong.

In our everyday lives, we also tend to look at things in parts rather than experiencing the world as a whole. This is not surprising, as such divisions start early on in school where we are divided into a range of subjects. Yet, the world is much more complex. If we are to understand its complexity, we have to think about the greater picture. We have to think in...

So as you may have noticed from last episode, computers keep getting faster and faster, and by the start of the 1950s they had gotten so fast that it often took longer to manually load programs via punch cards than to actually run them! The solution was the operating system (or OS), which is just a program with special privileges that allows it to run and manage other programs. So today, we’re going to trace the development of operating systems from the Multics and Atlas Supervisor to Unix and MS-DOS, and take at look at how these systems heavily influenced popular OSes like Linux, Windows, MacOS, and Android that we use today.

Igor Nikolic graduated in 2009 on his dissertation: co-evolutionary process for modelling large scale socio-technical systems evolution. He received his MSc as a chemical-- and bioprocess engineer at the Delft University of Technology. He spent several years as an environmental researcher and consultant at University of Leiden where he worked on life cycle analysis and industrial ecology. In his research he specializes in applying complex adaptive systems theory and agent based modeling.

On TEDxRotterdam Igor Nikolic left the audience in awe with his stunning presentation and visualizations, mapping complex systems.

About TEDx, x = independently organized event

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized. (Subject to certain rules and regulations.)

MIT grad shows how to use the substitution method to solve a system of linear equations (aka. simultaneous equations). More videos with Nancy coming in 2017! To skip ahead: 1) For a BASIC SUBSTITUTION example, skip to time 0:19. 2) For an example where it's TRICKIER to solve and also involves FRACTIONS, skip to 08:17. and P.S.) For WEIRDER-LOOKING DIFFERENT FORMS of systems, for which you can still use substitution, skip to 16:46.

For how to solve a system of linear equations with the ELIMINATION METHOD, jump to: https://youtu.be/8kRG7jlBMAY

What does it mean to solve a system of equations using the SUBSTITUTION METHOD? It means to solve for the x and y values that make both equations true, using the substitution method. Substitution is just one way of solving (elimination is another way). Here are the THREE STEPS you can always follow:

STEP 1) First, solve for x or y in either of the two equations in the system (get x or y alone on one side). It doesn't matter which equation you use first, and it doesn't matter whether you get x alone first or y alone first. You can pick whatever looks easiest to solve for in the system.

STEP 2) Then, take the expression you found for y (or x) and plug it into the other equation you haven't used yet....

The cardiovascular system, also known as the circulatory system, is the transportation system of the body. The major structures that make this possible are the heart, blood vessels and blood.
Simply put, the heart pumps the blood in order to move nutrients through the blood vessels to nourish and to remove metabolic wastes from the body.

The purpose of this video is to present a basic understanding of the Cardiovascular System. A more in depth study of the system will be presented in other CTE videos where we will look into each specific structure and function of the Cardiovascular system.

A, The pulmonary pathway
B. The Systemic pathway

Two Atria - which are the upper chambers.
Two ventricles - these are the lower chambers
The left and right side of the heart is divided by the SEPTUM

Blood Vessels
The word vessel has many meanings but in Anatomy and Physiology, Blood Vessels are meant for carrying or transporting the blood throughout the body.

Arterioles are smaller blood vessels that branch out from larger arteries and lead to the (arterial) capillaries, which are the smallest blood vessels in the body…
The arterial capillaries...

1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9... and 0. With just these ten symbols, we can write any rational number imaginable. But why these particular symbols? Why ten of them? And why do we arrange them the way we do? Alessandra King gives a brief history of numerical systems.

Human reproduction is complicated an important, and it's going to take a four part series for us to cover it. Today, we're kicking that off with the female reproductive system, starting with how sex hormones affect oogenesis and ovulation, continuing through how the ovarian and menstrual cycles mature and release oocytes, and create a comfy uterine environment for a fertilized egg.

Video featuring, from IBM: Mike Wing, Irving Wladawsky-Berger and Julia Grace.

If you look at our planet from space, what you see is something like a neural network with the cities as its nodes, and that is as good an image of the planet as a complex system of systems as one could hope for.

With the emergence of the internet in the mid-90's, the world became one global commons. In the past, we could understand that there was some mysterious unity to the various dimensions of life but we couldn't understand its dynamics, we couldn't observe and measure their interactions. We basically operated like the drunk who looks under the streetlight for his keys because that's where he can see.

Dynamical systems is a area of mathematics and science that studies how the state of systems change over time, in this module we will lay down the foundations to understanding dynamical systems as we talk about phase space and the simplest types of motion, transients and periodic motion, setting us up to approach the topic of nonlinear dynamical systems in the next module.

Transcription excerpt:

Within science and mathematics, dynamics is the study of how things change with respect to time, as opposed to describing things simply in terms of their static properties the patterns we observe all around us in how the state of things change overtime is an alternative ways through which we can describe the phenomena we see in our world.
A state space also called phase space is a model used within dynamic systems to capture this change in a system’s state overtime. A state space of a dynamical system is a two or possibly three-dimensional graph in which all possible states of a system are represented, with each possible state of the system...
