Tensegrity Robot: Child's Play or Space Tech? Super Ball Bot is an all-in-one landing and mobility platform based on tensegrity structures, allowing for lower-cost, and more reliable planetary missions. Inspiration strikes from the most unlikely sources. Adrian Agogino and Vytas Sunspiral of NASA’s Intelligent Systems Division and Fellows of the NASA Innovative Advanced Concepts program (www.nasa.gov/niac) are in the process of developing a Super Ball Bot--a collapsible, terrestrial robot based on a tensegrity toy that could one day become important to NASA’s exploration goals. These planetary surface explorers are sturdier and can withstand a substantial impact. The Super Ball Bot has a sphere-like matrix of cables and joints that could withstand being dropped from a spacecraft high above a planetary surface and hit the ground with a bounce. Once on the planet, the joints could adjust to roll the bot in any direction while housing a data collecting device within its core. The lighter weight and maneuverability of the Super Ball Bot could make an exploration mission possible to Saturn’s moon Titan. It has a soft planetary surface more like hazardous marsh with lakes of liquid methane that would not be suitable for a traditional rover that could sink down and get stuck.

The Tensegrity Bot will be used to explore how tensegrity structures, which are typically built as architectural art exhibits, can be controlled by computers. NASA's tensegrity robot prototype, SUPERball, is designed to absorb large impact forces in its structure while also retaining good mobility across rough and varied terrain. Complex behaviors such as rolling, crawling, and squeezing through gaps are possible by appropriately relaxing or contracting the "muscles" (cables) that connect the solid bars. However, the strange and unintuitive dynamics of this unusual system make it very difficult to plan purposeful behaviors like these.

This video shows a successful simulation of a plan for navigating SUPERball through an environment dense with obstacles. The plan was generated by the Sparse Stable Trees motion planning algorithm developed in the Pracsys lab, integrated the NASA Tensegrity Robotics Toolkit developed at NASA Ames.

Cockroach robots? Not nightmare fantasy but science lab reality

Texas engineers attach miniature computer wired into nervous system of live cockroaches for remote control and aim to gather video information in places such as broken sewers. They lurk in dark corners, feed off crumbs, and obey the commands of humans. Years in the making, and a contender for the most revolting creation to emerge from a laboratory, the robo-roach has arrived. Built by engineers in Texas, the robotic insect fuses a live cockroach with a miniature computer that is wired into the animal’s nervous system. At the push of a button, a human operator can control the beast. Or at least which way it scuttles. Hong Liang, who led the research at Texas A&M University, said the controllable insect could carry tiny video cameras, microphones and other sensors. With those on board, it could gather information from places where humans...

This video shows an overview of the different stages of the SuperBall tensegrity robot planetary exploration mission concept. In it you will see simulations of how the robot can be packed into an efficient configuration for launch, and then deployed before landing on another planet. At the moment of landing, the natural compliance of the tensegrity robot absorbs impact forces, much like an air-bag, and then it is able to control its tensile network to generate a rolling locomotion which can easily handle obstacles and complex terrains.

All the simulations of landing and rolling around different terrains were created in the physics based NASA Tensegrity Robotics Toolkit (NTRT) simulator -- which will be released as an open source package in 2014. This simulator has allowed us to research control approaches prior to building our hardware prototypes.

The ballbot is a dynamically stable mobile robot that balances on a single ball. It was built by Prof. Ralph Hollis at Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh, USA. To the best of our knowledge, it the first of its kind ever built. Recently, many other groups have started building such robots.

I work on the control and planning for the ballbot and this video demonstrates its robustness and balancing capabilities.
