7. Reversing Paralysis
One of the biggest scientific breakthroughs of the past year was when researchers at the EPFL in Switzerland were able to restore the leg movement of two macaque monkeys suffering from paralysis after nearly 2 weeks of sustaining their injuries. To do so, the scientists inserted two wireless implants into their brains that worked as a brain-spine interface, letting the nerve signals through once again. Through a computer, the device gets enabled to send signals from the brain to the location of the injury on the spine.

6. The Vitamin That Prevents Miscarriages

6.Limestone Jesus Slab
A stone slab was uncovered inside a chamber of Jesus’s tomb inside the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem, which was mentioned in our most sacred religious places video. This is possibly the limestone slab where Jesus’ body is said to have been laid after his crucifixion and christians believe it’s from here where he was resurrected.. This slab has not been accessed since 1555 AD. The research team were shocked to find portions of this tomb still in tact. This seems to be a remarkable discovery of epic proportions and will probably become a holy relic. An analysis revealed the limestone burial shelf and a second marble slab with a cross carved into its surface. The tomb has been resealed and probably won’t be opened for hundreds of years

5. Squashed Mountain Lion
In northern Russia, the cold weather preserved the bodies of two cave lion cubs and one is almost in perfect condition. The two well-preserved fossils were only about a week old when they were most likely crushed from an extensive collapse of cave sediment. To be blunt they...

Scientists have identified a new kind of fire which burns more cleanly.

Scientists have identified a new kind of fire which burns more cleanly.

According to a recently published study from the University of Maryland, or UMD, this phenomenon, called a blue whirl, “evolves from a fire whirl and burns with nearly soot-free combustion.”

Fire whirls are often vertical funnels of flames that whip up potentially dangerous, debris-carrying winds.

They also tend to be yellow in color because a lack of oxygen causes incomplete burning and the creation of soot.

A blue flame, on the other hand, reflects “there is enough oxygen for complete combustion, which means less or no soot, and is therefore a cleaner burn.”

As a UMD press release states, “The Clark School team initially set out to investigate the combustion and burning dynamics of fire whirls on water.”

As they were especially interested in the whirls’ use in cleaning up oil spills, they added liquid fuel to water to create a pool fire.

After manipulating the system upward with the help of tubes, the team noticed that the resulting fire whirl eventually turned into “a small, intensely whirling...

Tens of thousands of brine shrimp swimming upward in a laboratory tank produce a large jet of water the size of the whole group, mixing shallow water with deeper, saltier water. In the ocean, daily, vertical migrations of similarly small swimmers such as krill may cause large-scale mixing, bringing up key nutrients from the deep.

A new robot succeeds where other machines have failed at metamorphosis. By slipping into and stripping off various origami bodies, this cube-shaped robot gains new capabilities on the fly. Designing the origami exoskeletons that allow these bots to shape-shift took some “brilliant engineering,” says Antoine Cully, a roboticist at Imperial College London not involved in the study.

AOn a mission to detect planets outside of our solar system, NASA’s Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) is scheduled to launch no earlier than 6:32 p.m. EDT Monday, April 16. Prelaunch mission coverage will begin on NASA Television and the agency’s website Sunday, April 15, with three live briefings.

TESS is NASA’s next step in the search for planets outside of our solar system, known as exoplanets, including those that could support life. The mission is expected to catalog thousands of planet candidates and vastly increase the current number of known exoplanets. TESS will find the most promising exoplanets orbiting relatively nearby stars, giving future researchers a rich set of new targets for more comprehensive follow-up studies, including the potential to assess their capacity to harbor life.

Elwha River (River), Elwha Dam (Structure), salmon, Jeff Duda

Removing a dam involves more than impressive explosions. Releasing a river like Washington state's Elwha transforms the landscape and restores important pathways for native fish. Read the full story at

Engineers built a pair of dams along the Elwha about a century ago to capture its waters and provide hydropower to a nearby timber and paper mill operation. Both dams were recently dismantled as part of a broader push, across the United States and elsewhere, to remove aging dams. This video explores the removal of the dams on the Elwha River.

Narrator: With a bang — well, a series of them — the concrete fortresses of two giant dams holding back the Elwha River have come crumbling down. Dismantling the dams over the last few years in Washington State has been called the great Elwha Experiment. It’s a rare chance to watch what happens when a mighty river runs free once again, says Jeff Duda, a research ecologist at the U.S. Geological Survey.

Duda: There’ve been over a thousand dam removals in the United States, but the Elwha really stands out for a couple of reasons. One is the size of the dams. There were two large dams that were...
