What is SCALABILITY? What does SCALABILITY mean? SCALABILITY meaning - SCALABILITY pronunciation - SCALABILITY definition - SCALABILITY explanation - How to pronounce SCALABILITY?

Source: article, adapted under license.

Scalability is the capability of a system, network, or process to handle a growing amount of work, or its potential to be enlarged in order to accommodate that growth. For example, it can refer to the capability of a system to increase its total output under an increased load when resources (typically hardware) are added. An analogous meaning is implied when the word is used in an economic context, where scalability of a company implies that the underlying business model offers the potential for economic growth within the company.

Scalability, as a property of systems, is generally difficult to define and in any particular case it is necessary to define the specific requirements for scalability on those dimensions that are deemed important. It is a highly significant issue in electronics systems, databases, routers, and networking. A system whose performance improves after adding hardware, proportionally to the capacity added, is said to be a scalable system.

The scalability problem of cryptocurrencies

For bitcoin and ethereum to compete with more mainstream systems like visa and paypal, they need to seriously step up their game when it comes to transaction times. While paypal manages 193 transactions per second and visa manages 1667 transactions per second, Ethereum does only 20 transactions per second while bitcoin manages a whopping 7 transactions per second! The only way that these numbers can be improved is if they work on their scalability.

If we were to categorize the main scalability problems in the cryptocurrencies, they would be:

The time is taken to put a transaction in the block.
The time is taken to reach a consensus.

Scalability is vital when large numbers of users and a huge amount of data have to be served during peak times.
Catalysts []

On Facebook, Twitter & Co a few things have to be done differently than with traditional web applications where we have a user, a web server, an application server as well as a database server.

When the number of requests increases then the problem with scalability almost always resides with the database. Of course a cluster of DB-servers will solve the bottleneck problem for a while.
But a DB cluster solution is quite expensive compared to a real scalable solution.

When the load cannot be predicted, you have to build the application so that the database won´t become the bottleneck.

Therefore, you typically move the application into the cloud. When there are more users, there are more requests. When there are more requests, you can quickly add more servers.

When SQL databases reach their, you should change your architecture early enough towards NoSQL databases. Only use SQL databases for things that need to be transactional and store and retrieve other data from NoSQL databases.

We have done that for example for "Laumex" where millions of spare parts...

Success in business depend on few factors, one of the most crucial one is scalability. We tend to focus more on profit rather than sustainability and scalability. It is essential to look at the sustainability of the business before taking all the profits away. After ensuring sustainability the next major step is to have a scalability model. It's impossible to keep the competition hot without growth. Growth in business will definitely affect on the profitability. To have a scalable business model one must keep their business as light as possible. The process should be simple.

Scalability is going to be the biggest factor to bring blockchain use to the mainstream consumer. I believe 2018 will be the year that a true leader emerges and we start to see a lot more giant existing businesses use blockchain for their businesses. I think certain platforms have been designed with scalability in mind like EOS, Komodo and ICON to name a few. It'll be fascinating to see how this all plays out.

Scalability testing, is the testing of a software application to measure its capability to scale up or scale out in terms of any of its non-functional capability.

Performance, scalability and reliability testing are usually grouped together by software quality analysts.

The main goals of scalability testing are to determine the user limit for the web application and ensure end user experience, under a high load, is not compromised. One example is if a web page can be accessed in a timely fashion with a limited delay in response. Another goal is to check if the server can cope i.e. Will the server crash if it is under a heavy load?

Dependent on the application that is being tested, different parameters are tested. If a webpage is being tested, the highest possible number of simultaneous users would be tested. Also dependent on the application being...

This session will present methods for selecting optimal architecture (e.g. scaling out, hosted feature services, hardware and network capacity requirements), configuration (e.g. optimal instance configuration), performance tuning, testing and monitoring. We will present tools for analyzing the key performance factors and the root cause of problems. Attendees will learn practical skills that will help reduce their administration and infrastructure costs, including: finding costly bottlenecks, identifying under or over utilized resources, tuning and testing for performance, analyzing usage trends and producing effective reports.

Bitcoin Scalability SOLVED - Bitcoin to become "streaming money" and radically transform commerce.
- Billions of transactions per second
- 0 fees
- No Banks
- Just Hodl

The Bitcoin Lightning Network is essentially a decentralized system where users can set up trustless micropayment channels to conduct one or multiple payment transactions off-blockchain.

These channels reside outside the Bitcoin blockchain. However, once the payment channel is closed, the transactions that occurred between the channels are then broadcast, as a single transaction, to the main blockchain network. Thus, no matter the number of micro-transactions conducted, the blockchain is accessed only twice, when the channel is opened and when the channel is closed. Obviously, this approach would significantly reduce the load on the blockchain.

Presently, three teams are independently working on the LN implementation: ACINQ, Blockstream, and Lightning Labs. In early December 2017, they announced that their respective systems had completed payment tests on the main Bitcoin network. Moreover, these tests achieved interoperability across all three implantations.

Right now, to educate potential LN users, the website allows you try a...

2007 Google Seattle Conference on Scalability:
Lessons In Building Scalable Systems
Speaker: Reza Behforooz

Since launching Google Talk in the summer of 2005, we have
integrated the service with two large existing products: Gmail and
orkut. Each of these integrations provided unique scalability
challenges as we had to handle a sudden big increase in the
number of users. Today, Google Talk supports millions of users and
handles billions of packets per day. I will discuss several practical
lessons and key insights from our experience that can be used for
any project. These lessons will cover both engineering and
operational areas.

Reza Behforooz is a Staff Engineer at Google and is currently the
technical lead for the Google Talk servers. He's passionate about
building large systems and working on communication products in
an attempt to make the world a smaller place. While at Google, he has primarily worked on Google Talk, Gmail, orkut, Google Groups,
and shared infrastructure used by several Google applications.
