Abstract:
We present a system for image-based modeling and rendering of real-world scenes containing reflective and glossy surfaces. Previous approaches to image-based rendering assume that the scene can be approximated by 3D proxies that enable view interpolation using traditional back-to-front or z-buffer compositing. In this work, we show how these can be generalized to multiple layers that are combined in an additive fashion to model the reflection and transmission of light that occurs at specular surfaces such as glass and glossy materials. To simplify the analysis and rendering stages, we model the world using piecewise-planar layers combined using both additive and opaque mixing of light. We also introduce novel techniques for estimating multiple depths in the scene and separating the reflection and transmission components into different layers. We then use our system to model and render a variety of real-world scenes with reflections.

You can create any scene with a surface and an object on top of it. Use an Arnold surface shader as the surface material.

In this example I have an xGen mocap character in the scene which reflects in the polished ground. We play with several shader parameters which have to do with the reflectivity, mainly the "specularity" and "metalness". Before rendering you might also want to check the Arnold render settings and set the Ray Depth values as low as possible, in order to save render time.

Image-based modeling and rendering have been active areas of in computer vision and graphics since the early 1990s. After seminal work in representations and algorithms based on Light Fields and Lumigraphs, the field has seen steady improvements in many of the component technologies, including image-based modeling of 3D proxies, dealing with irregularly sampled data, the incorporation of video, and an interesting interplay with non-photorealistic rendering and computational photography. It has also spawned widely used consumer experiences such as panoramic "VR" photography, street-level (and indoor) immersive tours, and rich 3D navigation of Internet photo collections. In this talk, I review the evolution of this field, tease out some of the common themes and techniques, and speculate on the remaining difficulties and promises in this field, including the handling of reflections and transparent motion that commonly occur in such applications.
