A huge demonstration in Tirana in support of former President Sali Berisha has passed off peacefully, despite fears of more rioting.

Thousands of people converged on the headquarters of Berisha's Democratic Party in the Albanian capital, before marching to the city's central square.

Masked police checked for weapons at roadblocks around Albania's capital Tirana on Wednesday, before the latest opposition protest called by ex-President Sali Berisha.

But the huge demonstration in his support passed off peacefully.

Several thousand people chanting anti-government slogans converged on the headquarters of Berisha's Democratic Party before marching to the capital's central Skanderberg Square.

They were waving American and Albanian flags.

The situation remained tense in Albania Wednesday as the president promised immediate reimbursement only for the poorest investors in two failed get-rich-quick schemes.

The collapse of the investments prompted days of protests and rioting across the impoverished nation.

As President Sali Berisha pledged the return of the money in a news conference, the Socialist opposition leader increased its demands for the government to step down.

An estimated one in three Albanians have sunk a total of one (b) billion U-S dollars into shaky pyramid investment schemes.

Now they have nothing to show for it.

The government outlawed the get-rich-quick money making businesses last Thursday.

Albanian President Berisha expressed his regret and solidarity with the people affected by the investment scams.

He said the failure of private enterprise was one of the downsides of a free market in a young democracy.

Berisha told reporters that only the poorest investors will be reimbursed immediately from the two schemes.

Their collapse prompted days of nation-wide unrest.

Albanian President Sali Berisha has said people who fear for their savings in high-risk investment funds should stop being so sceptical.

Four large funds have collapsed or had their assets put under government control since mid January.

After widespread protests by investors, the government has promised to pay the money back.

Confirmation that yet another high-risk investment account had collapsed only added to the concerns of troubled Albanians Tuesday.

Fitim Gerzhalliu of the Gjallica fund admitted he was broke on state radio and television.

The admission confirmed what investors of the fund had feared for some time -- the coffers were empty.

Queues of dispirited investors stretched from banks in the Albanian capital of Tirana.

The company's accounts and property has been impounded.

It is the fourth large fund to have collapsed or have its assets put under government control.

Under a new law enacted in parliament, investors in two earlier failures: Xhaferri and Populli, will be partially reimbursed.
