In this short video, you see just how easy it is to get great results using a simple, effective and economical 2 soft box lighting set-up (for photographers with strobes and studio lights).
I shoot using an Olympus OMD and Canon 5D (with its standard 50mm lens) and compare results at the end.
Enjoy!

There are several lighting positions that photographers have developed over the years. People like George Hurrell, who used tungsten to shoot stars, used these lighting positions. Learn to identify what a butterfly or Rembrandt light is. Knowing these positions, and where the light placed to create them, will help you see how photographers light their images. These are departure points from which you will create your own look and direction. Its hard to depart from someplace you have never been there. This will teach you the basics and give you a good foundation to build on.
This video is not as slick as some of the others we have done but it has great basic instructions on portrait lighting. (Don't miss the ending, it's the most exciting part!)

With iOS 11 and the new iPhone 8 Plus and X, Apple added a new feature to the cameras that I think people will definitely like an probably overuse on Instagram, social in general, etc.
Regardless it is a cool feature and it's called Portrait Lighting. Just like Portrait mode that we're used to by now that uses the dual cameras on the phone to judge depth and create that bokeh depth of field look using software, this mode uses the dual camera setup and takes the software magic a step further.
Instead of just being able to create a bokeh effect, Apple has introduced the ability to use that depth information to create different lighting effects from Natural Lighting to Stage Lighting and more.

Shadow, emotion, mood, storytelling--all of these are fundamental elements of a dramatic portrait. In this new Dramatic Portraiture and Lighting tutorial, we've partnered with Chris Knight to produce this step-by-step, all-inclusive walkthrough of his advanced portrait workflow. The story-telling centrality of his method lies in the understanding that creating light should help to fulfill the narrative, not the other way around.

This tutorial is a great in-depth look at a professional portrait photographer using additional post-production tools like Adobe Lightroom & Adobe Photoshop to dodge and burn and color grade his images. Chris is a photography teacher at the New York Film Academy and professional retoucher.

Three point lighting is nothing new, but for many self taught photographers it is something you never learn. I really believe that learning to light this way and build it up in layers will benefit your photography EVEN if you only shoot natural or available light.

Lighting practice tip for learning portraiture lighting. Practicing on real people is great, but there are some real benefits to using a simple mannequin head to learn portrait lighting setups and patterns. Things like butterfly lighting, short lighting, and rembrandt lighting take some time to learn and get used to.
But you can go at your own pace if you use a subject that never gets tired of posing for you!

http://www.GoodLightMag.com/16 - How to light from an angle that is flattering your female photo model
When the face of your subject is toward the light and the body away from it, the light flows better and enhances the shape of the person being photographed. This rule revolves around creating beautiful shapes. The photo no longer has a 2-dimensional surface, but a flawless 3-D shape. Additionally, it creates a sense of normality, as the viewer sees a real person instead of a 2-dimension photograph.
In the poses where the model’s face is toward the light, the photograph will surprise with an evenly lit complexion. This makes the model enjoy a natural glow, with less wrinkles and bags under the eyes and other flaws.
Conversely, if the face is turned away from the light and the body into it, half of the face is covered in shadow, and all wrinkles and lines around the eyes and the mouth become more pronounced. Moreover, due to the direct lighting on the body, shadows are eliminated so the body becomes as shapeless as a 2-dimension photograph, without real curves or a real structure.
Getting the right lighting is quite a simple process, as long as you follow this rule. For instance, if the light is on the right side of the camera, make...

In today's TSL lesson we are going way back to the very basics of a one light setup to light a face. Our talent Tiffany Taylor is beautiful and it's very easy to demonstrate on her face. Everything in the world is a ball, a cube or a cylinder. The human face is nothing more than a ball with features. Let's look at how to light the face and background to create separation and interest with a single light source. We are using a Dynalite continuous light source for our portraits because we are shooting on the Canon 1DC and will pull still images from the video footage. This was an interesting process and one we will talk about in our next lesson at length. Let's look at the basics of a one light setup.

Join award winning photographer Jason Lanier at one of his workshops in the Georgia woods where he shares his technique for a single strobe light set up to achieve some stellar results. PLEASE SHARE, LEAVE A COMMENT, THUMBS UP, AND SUBSCRIBE!
Using the Flashpoint Rovelight RL600B and a lightstand/assistant, Jason shot with a wide open aperture using the Zeiss Batis 85mm f/1.8 lens. The combination of shooting wide open with flash can give some pretty dramatic results, and we hope you'll agree that Jason achieved that in this shoot!
The model is the beautiful Piper Williams. We thank you for watching and invite you to stick around and watch a few more videos while you're here. All shots edited using Lightroom Only.
Thanks!

I want to show you how you can create some awesome light for portrait photography and headshots using just ONE Flash! Great portrait lighting is not the result of owning lots of lights. Great studio lighting comes from learning to see light.
In this photography lighting tutorial, I am going to walk you through different portrait lighting set-ups that you can do with just one light. The light can be a studio monolight or a simple speedlight, and it doesn’t have to be expensive. I’ll also show you how to use simple reflectors and light modifiers like softboxes and beauty dishes to enhance the quality of the light that you create for your portraits.
This is the first in a series of studio lighting tutorials that I will post using 1, 2, 3 and 4 lights.

Beauty Portrait Photography Lighting - Have you ever tried using colored light in your photo's shadows?
In this quick studio photography tutorial, I show you how bouncing colored studio light into the shadow side of your model can create an interesting effect through subtly blending warm and cold light in the same photograph.
Enjoy the tutorial,
Karl Taylor
P.S. Please comment and let me know if you've tried this or something similar.
