The fiscal cliff is a recently-coined term referring to the effects that could result in tax increases, spending cuts and a corresponding reduction in the US budget deficit beginning in 2013 if existing laws are not changed by the end of 2012. The deficit — the difference between what the government takes in and what it spends — is expected to be reduced by roughly half beginning in the first days of 2013. This sharp decrease in the deficit in such a short period of time is known as the fiscal cliff. The Congressional Budget Office (CBO) estimates the sudden reduction will probably lead to a recession in early 2013 with the pace of economic activity picking up by late 2013.

"President Obama invited Congressional Republicans and Democrats to the White House next week to begin talks to resolve the country's impending fiscal crisis, but he insisted on raising taxes on the wealthiest.

"I'm not wedded to every detail of my plan. I'm open to compromise, I'm open to new ideas, I'm committed to solving our fiscal challenges, but I refuse to accept any approach that isn't balanced," the president said in his first statement since winning re-election.

He also made it clear that being balanced means having the wealthiest pay more.

"As I've said before, we can't just cut our way to prosperity," Obama said. "If we're serious about reducing the deficit we have to combine spending cuts with revenue. That means asking the wealthy to pay a little more in taxes."*

Cenk Uygur, Michael Shure (Political correspondent, TYT and Current TV), and John Iadarola (TYT University) break down the realities of the "fiscal cliff," Obama's compromises and willingness to compromise his platform vs. Boehner's unwillingness to do so.

"Last night, the House of Representatives passed the Senate's compromise bill to avert the so-called "fiscal cliff." The bill, dubbed the "American Taxpayer Relief Act of 2012," raised taxes on (some of) the wealthiest Americans, while punting several other budget decisions down the road, including whether or not the so-called "sequester" spending cuts will occur."*

A deal on the fiscal cliff has finally been reached. So, what did we get and lose? Did the mandate-free Obama get what he campaigned for from the all-powerful Republicans? Cenk Uygur breaks down what happened and what will almost certainly happen next.

President Obama turns up the pressure on Republicans in the "fiscal cliff" talks, urging Americans to support his drive to raise taxes on the wealthy while extending tax cuts for the middle class.

In a Christmas-season visit to a toy factory in Philadelphia, US President Barack Obama portrayed congressional Republicans as "Scrooges" who risked sending the country over the fiscal cliff rather than strike a deal to avert the tax increases and spending cuts that begin in January unless Congress intervenes.

"If Congress does nothing, every family in America will see their taxes automatically go up on January 1," Mr Obama said. "That's sort of like the lump of coal you get for Christmas. That's a Scrooge Christmas."

At immediate issue is whether the tax cuts that originated under former President George W. Bush should be extended beyond 31 December for all taxpayers including the wealthy, as Republicans want, or just for taxpayers with income under $250,000 (£156,000) as Obama and his fellow Democrats want.

In Washington, the Republican House Speaker John Boehner said increasing tax rates on anyone was the wrong approach and said Obama had not been serious in the fiscal cliff negotiations.

"Congress faces a January deadline, dubbed the "fiscal cliff," when taxpayers could be hit with thousands of dollars in tax increases and nearly a trillion in federal spending cuts.

Flanked by supporters in the East Room, the president said Congress could end economic uncertainty "right now" by simply extending Bush-era tax cuts for middle class families.

"That one step would give millions of families, 98 percent of Americans and 97 percent of small businesses, the certainty that they need going into the new year," Obama said. "It would immediately take a huge chunk of the economic uncertainty off the table and that would lead to new jobs and faster growth."

Obama's comments were in sharp contrast to remarks made by Boehner just two hours earlier.

Boehner suggested that all of the Bush tax cuts, including for top tier tax payers, be extended past the January deadline to give the White House and Congress more time to address the country's long term debt and entitlement issues next year."*

"President Barack Obama is preparing to expand the fiscal cliff fight beyond the confines of Washington, travelling the country and leaning on Democratic activist groups to help apply political pressure.

The goal, organizers said, is to keep engaged the activists and followers who have stood with Obama through two campaigns, and to begin applying external pressure to the president's negotiations with congressional Republicans.

And so, top Obama operatives are gaming out ways to squeeze political capital out of the 2012 elections, aiming to affect the lame-duck session in Congress. Obama previewed the strategy in a conference call with activists after the election, saying that a second term that will include some barnstorming across the country."*

President Obama has cut his trip to Hawaii short to meet with congressional leaders in hopes of a last-minute effort to avoid the upcoming "fiscal cliff".

President Obama and congressional leaders have until January 1, 2013 to find a solution to the looming fiscal cliff deadlock. January 1, 2013 marks the expiration of the 2010 Tax Relief Act, meaning an increase in taxes. The first of the year also is the start-date for spending cuts related to the Budget Control Act of 2011, or the act the brought a conclusion to the debt ceiling crises.

So far, no one has been able to come up with an agreement to avoid pushing the country over this metaphorical "fiscal cliff." Most discussions have involved extending the Bush tax cuts or amending the Budget Control Act of 2011, but the danger of increasing America's deficit through reduced taxes and increased spending has made it difficult for the U.S. government to reach a decision.

Both Republicans and Democrats are pointing fingers at each other as to why there hasn't been an agreement. This afternoon Obama, Vice President Joe Biden, House Speaker John Boeher, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell and others will congregate in the...

US President Barack Obama said that a deal to avert the fiscal cliff budget crisis due to hit within hours was in sight but was not yet done. Obama said the fallback deal being negotiated in Congress ahead of a January 1 deadline would start to solve America's budget and deficit problems in several steps rather than in a big, comprehensive deal that he had hoped for.

President Barack Obama invites congressional leaders to the White House to start negotiating a deal to prevent sharp tax hikes and spending cuts from going into effect at the end of the year and said he was "open to compromise."

In his first appearance at the White House since defeating his Republican challenger Mitt Romney in Tuesday's election, President Obama said he was committed to solving America's fiscal challenges.

"The American people voted for action, not politics as usual," he said. "You elected us to focus on your jobs, not ours, and in that spirit, I have invited leaders of both parties to the White House next week so we can start to build concencus around the challenges that we can only solve together."

http://www.euronews.com/ US President Barack Obama is addressing Congress in a bid to thrash out a last-minute deal to avoid the 'fiscal cliff'.

The term refers to a series of tax hikes and spending cuts that will be implemented automatically if a deal cannot be reached by the end of the year - this Monday.

"My hope is that regardless of partisan differences, our top priority has to be making sure that taxes on middle class families do not go up that would hurt our economy badly. We can get that done," Obama said during in interview with NBC.

"Democrats and Republicans - both say they don't want taxes to go up on middle class families. That's something we all agree on. If we can get that done, that takes a big bite out of the fiscal cliff," he added.

The president also blamed failure to reach an agreement on the Republicans, who he accused of being preoccupied with protecting tax breaks for the wealthy.

The deadline for a deal is midnight on Monday local time.
