After Katrina, people ask why would anyone establish a city in a place that is below sea level, floods nearly every year, is as hot and humid as any tropical jungle, subject to outbreaks of deadly disease and faces annihilation as the result of a direct hit from a hurricane? More to the point, why would anyone try to save it?

When you mention New Orleans to most people, the images evoked are of a lively port city populated by a sultry mix of people from many different cultures and, of course, jazz, Mardi Gras and world class cuisine. What few people realize is that the very forces that created New Orleans now threaten its very existence. The eco-system is incredibly fragile and volatile, and if no action is taken, the city could be wiped out in the next hurricane or gradually swept into the sea from the current course of things.

With the critical issues of global warming and our ongoing struggle to strike a healthy balance between a healty environment and a growing economy, New Orleans serves as a microcosm in which we can examine the critical issues facing our planet.

In a tale of discovery, adventure and magic, join David Attenborough on a journey through the world-famous Natural History Museum in London
As the doors are locked and night falls, Attenborough meets the extinct creatures that fascinate him the most, as they magically come alive in front of his eyes.

This 90 minute 3D spectacular, with its ground-breaking CGI technology, is a special collaboration of experts and curators from the Natural History Museum.

I've been coming here since I was a boy of 8 and it's one of the holiest of holies — one of the great places for natural history. I didn't visit the museum very often, Leicester where I lived was 100 miles away from London, so coming here was quite a journey. Each time was an astonishment — just looking at cases full of electric blue butterflies is enough to impress a child — enough to impress me anyway.

CGI has reached a peak of perfection and some of the people responsible for reaching that peak are involved in this project. It doesn't look like a cartoon — it simply looks real.

It did occur to me standing on the top floor of the central hall you've got this enormous space, like a cathedral, which gives you this sense of distance — an ideal place for computer generated...

When a curious fish was found by fishermen on the Indian Ocean coast of South Africa and passed to the curator of the local museum, Darwin’s predicted ‘living fossil’ appeared to have surfaced. The eerily splendid coelacanth, now 400 million years old, called into question many of our established beliefs about evolution.

It took 200,000 years for our human population to reach 1 billion—and only 200 years to reach 7 billion. But growth has begun slowing, as women have fewer babies on average. When will our global population peak? And how can we minimize our impact on Earth’s resources, even as we approach 11 billion?

It is one of three major museums on Exhibition Road in South Kensington, the others being the Science Museum and the Victoria and Albert Museum.
The museum is home to life and earth science specimens comprising some 80 million items within five main collections: botany, entomology, mineralogy, paleontology and zoology. The museum is a world-renowned centre of research specialising in taxonomy, identification and conservation. Given the age of the institution, many of the collections have great historical as well as scientific value, such as specimens collected by Charles Darwin. The museum is particularly famous for its exhibition of dinosaur skeletons and ornate architecture.

Bees are called social insects because they live and work together as a community. Thousands of female bees, called worker bees, live together in a hive with a queen bee. The queen bee is marked with a red dot so we can see her better.
The worker bees are all females, but they almost never lay eggs. Worker bees do almost all the chores in the hive. They gather pollen or nectar, guard the entrance, clean the hive, build the comb, make honey, tend the queen, and feed the larvae. They even fan the hive with their wings to keep it cool on a hot summer day.
The queen bee is larger than the worker bees. She lays about a thousand eggs each day! Watch the worker bees attending to the queen bee and feeding her. The worker bees touch and lick her as they tend to her needs. They get a substance from the queen that they carry around the hive, and when they touch and lick other bees, this substance, or pheromone, tells them that the queen bee is alive and well. Then all the worker bees keep doing their jobs. The queen bee walks from cell to cell to lay a small white egg in each one. She lays all the eggs.
Inside the cells, the eggs hatch into larvae or grubs. The workers take care of all the larvae, which include several queen bee...

What is the relationship between the Neanderthals and us? Neanderthals were very widespread in Europe until about 60,000 years ago and this is the time when modern humans, Homo sapiens, are thought to have started migrating out of Africa. Chris Stringer, the Museum's Human Origins expert, tells us how recent genetic discoveries have altered our understanding of the overlap of several thousands of years between the two species. Beautiful spring day! We survived the cruel shanghai winter! Finally! We took some time today to visit the (almost) new Shanghai Natural History Museum. This building was designed by American firm Perkins and Will.
Whats special about this place, is that it was placed inside the Jingan Sculpture Park. And the architects did some great efforts to make it fit right in. The museum is an extension of the park, with a large sweep of green going all the way up to the roof! Unfortunately this part is not accesible for the visitors… :( bummer!
Also, to make its less an obstacle the biggest part of this museum was placed under ground. With the help of a large void light is brought in to the lower levels. Quite smart!
This is our exploration. Please let us know what you think in the comments!!

Have a great week ahead!
