What comes after networks? The 'network' has been a defining feature of human activity since its conceptualization, and has found its way into nearly all facets of life: there are social and technological networks, biological and electrical networks, media networks and theoretical networks. But there are fundamental frictions to networks, and though it may be tough to understand what a world without them would be like, that is perhaps the best reason to ask anyway.

TRIGGER WARNINGS! The internet’s method of warning viewers that the discussion or content they are about to view may ‘trigger’ anxiety or PTSD. But as trigger warnings move out of private spaces and into public ones, like college classrooms, do they limit conversation? Or is it the opposite? Join Mike on this week’s episode of Idea Channel as he articulates the difference between online trigger warnings and those within the classroom. Are trigger warnings actually encouraging conversation? Let us know what you think in the comments!

Math is invisible. Unlike physics, chemistry, and biology we can't see it, smell it, or even directly observe it in the universe. And so that has made a lot of really smart people ask, does it actually even EXIST?!?! Similar to the tree falling in the forest, there are people who believe that if no person existed to count, math wouldn't be around . .at ALL!!!! But is this true? Do we live in a mathless universe? Or if math is a real entity that exists, are there formulas and mathematical concepts out there in the universe that are undiscovered? Or is it all fiction? Whew!! So many questions, so many theories... watch the episode and let us know what you think!

Pizza might be an Italian invention, but it is a worldwide phenomenon. Pizza has managed to evolve from a simple, rustic food item to something much more impactful. For many it is a comfort food, something that can cause an actual psychological reaction. And it is also a product, heavily branded and resold on t-shirts, hats, socks, etc. Join us as we look back on the history of pizza, and what it has become today.

The fallacies fly thick and fast as a feminist ideologue attempts to explain why egalitarianism is not a superior moral framework to feminism.

Update: Mike has responded very maturely here: https://twitter.com/mikerugnetta/status/621045053490917376

Note: MIke's wonderful "explanation of egalitarianism" here, and it is just as misapprehended as his video: http://mikerugnetta.tumblr.com/post/123744373585/op-onions-pretty-disappointed-with-idea-channel

"As far as I understand it, the general principle of egalitarianism is “equality”. That all people should be treated as equals regardless of their race, gender, socio-economic status, and so on. This is awesome! And great! There is no shortage of people who agree. I agree! The question then becomes How does egalitarianism seek to accomplish this very lofty goal?"

By people treating each other as equals, Mike. It's that simple.

Welcome to Crash Course World Mythology, our latest adventure (and this series may be literally adventurous) in education. Over the next 40 episodes or so, we and Mike Rugnetta are going to learn about the world by looking at the foundational stories of a bunch of different cultural traditions. We’re going to look at the ways that people’s stories define them, and the ways they shape their culture. We’re going to learn about gods, goddesses, heroes, and tricksters, and a lot more. We’re going to walk the blurry line between myth and religion, and we’re going to like it.

Is Futurama the Best Argument Against Transhumanism? | Idea Channel | PBS Digital Studios

Transhumanism is a scientific philosophy that says technology will solve all our human biological constraints and that immortality is right around the corner (well not RIGHT around the corner, but WAYYY closer). They envision a world of endlessly euphoric robo-humans that represent the next step in evolution. And while this sounds super awesome, we had to ask, will this really make us happy?! If you watch Futurama, than you know that the answer is probably NO. While not an exact illustration of transhumanism, Futurama does show a future of vast technological ability, where today's everyday problems are rendered moot, and yet the characters on the show still seem to find themselves in some very non-euphoric emotional states. Does this disprove what transhumanists expect for our future?

You're probably a hipster.

We all hate hipsters, right? They seem so smug and arrogant, with their ray bans and scarves and ironic t-shirts. Even those who CLEARLY ARE hipsters still recoil at the label. Embracing irony over earnestness, the key to hipsters is not just what they enjoy, but how they enjoy it. Borrowing from other subcultures, (see: Handlebar mustaches and flannel shirts), hipsters reappropriate these fashion elements as their own. But don't we all do that? Our own fashion came from SOMEWHERE, and certainly has been refined. Do we all have a little bit of hipster blood in us?

Boiling down an entire GENERATION of people into one neat little set of descriptors or pinning upon them the responsibility for the failure of some industry or fast food item is ABSURD. But either way, it happens. And in our current clickbait dystopia, it happens to millennials ... a lot. Maybe because, since we’re narcissistic, we’re obsessed with what people are saying about us so we’ll click on whatever calls us out. And because, as we work through our hit list of industries, olds wanna know what segment of the capitalist utopia we’re gunning for next. Today, we’re going to accept this silly premise… that millennials are lazy ruiners of things who never want to grow up. And we’re going to talk–on the complainers own terms–about why that may be the case. And to do that: we’re gonna talk about HOW GENERATIONS WORK so we can once...

Adventure Time is an animated kids show on the Cartoon Network that is super popular, not just with the kids, but with full grown adults too! Why would a bunch of serious adults, including Mike's Mom, watch Adventure Time??? We think its because the show taps into our memories of childhood with nostalgia. But this isn't the "I Love the 90's" kind of nostalgia that we normally talk about! We're talking about Romantic Nostalgia which is a confusing emotion, mixing happy and sad, creating a powerful mix that really hits you right in your gut. It adds a ton of emotional depth to an already great kids show, which you should all really watch, because it is AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!

Here's an idea: Mike Rugnetta reinvented the critical essay for the web. As host of Idea Channel, Mike deep-dives into a single idea every week, drawing connections between pop culture, technology and art—with a healthy side dish of animated GIFs. In its first year, it's racked up over 12 million views and over 300,000 subscribers on YouTube. A programmer and composer in Brooklyn, Mike previously toured as one-third of MemeFactory, a performative lecture about the Internet, soon to be released as a book.

Recorded in September 2013 at XOXO, an arts and technology festival in Portland, Oregon celebrating independent artists using the Internet to make a living doing what they love. For more, visit http://xoxofest.com.

If you play video games, you've shot a gun. And those guns are REALISTIC. So real that many are actually LICENSED by IRL arms dealers. Which means that when you buy a video game, you're also putting money in the pockets of those gun manufacturers. That's fine and dandy if you're a fan of guns, but if you are someone who considers themselves anti-gun, this creates quite the moral quandary.

It's no secret that on the internet, cats rule supreme. But why? What is it about cats that so thoroughly entertains and mesmerizes human beings? As part of Purina's Better With Pets Summit, held on November 19th, 2013, PBS Idea Channel host Mike Rugnetta takes a deep and humorous dive into our tireless obsession with cats in the digital world — even wondering whether the Internet itself is made of cats. From historical examples and social media trends to the curious effects of toxoplasmosis, he examines
this cultural phenomenon from an array of fascinating angles.

The idea that violence is characterized mainly by the inability to choose has raised many questions and inspired confusion here at Idea Channel. So this week we wanted to spend some time on it. Violence is often spoken about as one particular thing: bodily harm. The legal concept of violence cites the use of physical force–think movement, activity, bodies. Today what we will argue is that violence is about CHOICE as much or more so than BODIES, that it can in fact be passive, and that there is an important ethical dimension to thinking of violence as more than “physical violence”, which is just one of many different kinds of violence. But don’t take our word for it, watch the episode and let us know what you think in the comments!

Yes he's a video game system, but she is so much more than that!! BMO from the fantastic show Adventure Time identifies as both male and female, and because of that expresses the ideals of Third Wave Feminism!! Third Wave Feminism questions if gender is actually binary, tied to our biological sex. Is our understanding of masculinity and femininity fair, or even ACCURATE? Of course, BMO has no biological gender, so there's no cultural expectations that anchors her (him?) down. But it all seems a non-issue in the Adventure Time world. What do you think, is BMO male or female? Or does it even matter? Watch the episode to find out!

Mike lives in New York City and makes the majority of his living as a composer writing only Creative Commons licensed works. Not only does he think it important for makers to know Copyleft and non-restrictive licenses are a viable option for making their living, but also that they are preferable in so many ways to the broken, confusing media rights management system which takes advantage of all but the most accomplished and pays the consumer absolutely no mind (and yet somehow, we are not all collectively outraged). He would like to tell his Little Rights Management Story in the hopes that - at the very least - someone in the audience won't make the same stupid mistakes he did based entirely on false assumptions.
