Marijuana, also known as cannabis, among other names, is a preparation of the Cannabis sativa plant - the hemp plant, intended for recreational and medicinal uses.
The main psychoactive chemical in marijuana is delta-9-tetrahydro-cannabinol, or THC. The Cannabis plant preparation also contains other compounds that are chemically related to THC, called cannabinoids.
THC is chemically similar to a class of substances found naturally in our nervous system called endogenous cannabinoids, or endocannabinoids, of which anandamide is best known so far. The endocannabinoids are part of a newly discovered system named the Endocannabinoid system, or ECS.
How the ECS works
The ECS acts as a modulator of neurotransmission.

Marijuana has several different effects on the body. If you're using it medically you should prepare yourself for some side effects. For some people these side effects are mild, but if you don't know that they're happening they can be a little frightening. Some of them are pretty basic and maybe ones that you've heard about through pop culture or subcultures that use cannabis.
First is your eyes get red. The cannabis in your system actually is opening up capillaries, so it produces an effect of red eyes. This is something that's not permanent. It'll go away. Some Visine will clear it right up. It can be uncomfortable, so you may want to have Visine near your medicine when you take it.
Another side effect is dry mouth which is also not permanent. You can just have water near you and it will clear up that side effect right away.
Depending on the type of cannabis you are using, you may feel drowsy or tired. For some people this is the desired effect. For other people cannabis can kind of wake you up. It has a lot to do with the strain that you're taking.
No one has ever overdosed on medical...

There's just no way to talk about marijuana without someone completely misinterpreting what I say. Some of you are going to call me a fascist for saying anything bad about pot. Others are going to attack me for not coming down on it hard enough. But the truth of the matter is that many things that are far more dangerous than pot are totally legal in this country. That's not my opinion, it's what scientific studies show us. No one is saying marijuana is totally safe. But is it so bad for you that it should be illegal, even though it has benefits? Watch and decide. Happy weed day.

And, yes, we do know about the new study on brain development, which came out long after we taped. But as with a lot of research, it's being totally misinterpreted by the media. Go check out the references to see a nice article where the author of the study says the same thing.

"On Monday, the scientific journal Addiction released a sweeping new review of 20 years of research into the recreational use of marijuana. Dr. Wayne Hall, director of the Centre for Youth Substance Abuse Research at the University of Queensland and an adviser to the World Health Organization, began the review in 1993. At that time, there were “very few epidemiological studies of the health effects of cannabis,” he says. The existing scientific literature was “dominated” by “animal studies from the 1970s,” and the only human laboratory studies available were from the late ’70s and early ’80s. And even those analyzed only “the effects of sustained cannabis use over 7–35 days on the health of college students.”
What changed to make a review like this possible? Two things: First, people are smoking more weed. “During the past half-century,” the authors say, “recreational cannabis use has become almost as common as tobacco use among adolescents and young adults,” which means there are simply more weed smokers to study.” *

A former pot head extremist covers the positive and negative effects of long term marijuana usage.
If you or a loved one struggle with addiction feel free to reach out to me!
My marijuana use had many levels to it. Initially pot would make me trip out, every time I would smoke weed I'd get this heavy dissociation. Then cannabis became more of a sedative that would give me energy. Finally whenever I'd be smoking weed it'd hardly do anything at all. My tolerance to THC got so high it was a big part of my reasoning as to why I stopped smoking weed. I searched weed videos trying to understand what was happening as a result of smoking cannabis. It seemed the marijuana effects started to reverse and I thought I was going insane from smoking marijuana. The 420 days of smoking pot and having fun were long gone. It got so bad smoking dabs had little to no effect. I couldn't even get high dabbing. I then faced a withdrawal from the substance.
Cannabinoids have incredible medicinal value. Medical marijuana is far safer than a lot of prescribed...

Watch more Marijuana Facts & Medical Marijuana videos: http://www.howcast.com/videos/506370-Psychological-Effects-Marijuana
So I would say the most important psychological effect of marijuana is the effect it has when people hear the name, marijuana. In fact, in the 1930s there was a newspaper headlines about homicide cases in New York people would say just being the room with marijuana was enough to give them homicidal vibrations and to cause them to go violent and kill people. This was an absurd idea, but it was part of the era of reefer madness.
All of this is just to tell you that the effects that a drug has on the psyche, especially a psychologically activating drug or psychoactive drug has a lot to do with how we perceive it, the context that it's introduced to us in, and it's not just all about chemistry and neuro-chemistry and pharmacology and receptors. So it's important to understand the psychological effects of marijuana have a lot to do with how the user, the consumer, of marijuana is prepared to experience it. That's called expectation. There's actually a whole field called social pharmacology. So that's social pharmacology 101.
Now given that there are still some effects that you can imagine in a naive or first-time user...

A new study shows just how extensive the damage marijuana use has on the human body and the results are…not that bad. Cenk Uygur and Ana Kasparian hosts of The Young Turks discuss.
Does this study make you less likely to smoke weed? Let us know in the comments below.

“New research published today in the journal JAMA Internal Medicine confirms what many of us have suspected for some time: If you smoke a lot of weed — like a lot of it — it can potentially do permanent damage to your short-term memory.
Professor Reto Auer of the University of Lausanne led a team of researchers who examined data on the marijuana habits of nearly 3,400 Americans over a 25-year period. At the end of the study period, the subjects took a battery of tests designed to assess cognitive abilities — memory, focus, ability to make quick decisions, etc.
The study found that people who smoked marijuana on a daily basis for a long period of time — five years or more — had poorer verbal memory in middle age than people who didn't smoke, or who smoked less. This association remained even after researchers...

Is weed bad for you?
Depending on who you ask, weed is either a cancer fighting wonder drug, or the devil trying to corrupt us all. And since there’s 22 states considering changing their marijuana laws, we wanted to get to the bottom of the question - is weed really bad for you??
Now, before we get started on the biological impacts of what happens when you get high/ blaze/burn/light up/scroll/bake (scroll? really?)
Let’s break the potential down side into three sections. The brain, the lungs, and cancer.
First off - the brain.
It is assumed that the use of marijuana by teenagers is harmful to brain development - the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) warns teens in particular to avoid marijuana as their little brains are still developing.
And weed’s main psychoactive ingredient THC definitely does act on the brain - it mimics the brain’s natural endocannabinoids, which regulate our physiological functions, such as appetite, pain, memory and mood. Now anything that affects the brain’s chemistry should be used very carefully -our brain is a well regulated machine and it is a bad idea to fu** with that system - for example if you take away our brains ability to regulate appetite...

The Science of Marijuana: How THC Affects the Brain:
“Some people believe smoking marijuana carries no risks. But scientific research shows that there are risks, especially for teens. Marijuana affects a person’s judgment and can impair his or her ability to drive."
What Is THC?:
“THC, or tetrahydrocannabinol, is the chemical responsible for most of marijuana's psychological effects. It acts much like the cannabinoid chemicals made naturally by the body, according to the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA)."
