Economic growth has been slowing for the past 50 years, but relief might come from an unexpected place — a new form of manufacturing that is neither what you thought it was nor where you thought it was. Industrial systems thinker Olivier Scalabre details how a fourth manufacturing revolution will produce a macroeconomic shift and boost employment, productivity and growth.

Food processing is the transformation of raw ingredients, by physical or chemical means into food, or of food into other forms. Food processing combines raw food ingredients to produce marketable food products that can be easily prepared and served by the consumer. Food processing typically involves activities such as mincing and macerating, liquefaction, emulsification, and cooking (such as boiling, broiling, frying, or grilling); pickling, pasteurization, and many other kinds of preservation; and canning or other packaging. (Primary-processing such as dicing or slicing, freezing or drying when leading to secondary products are also included.
The Food Industry is a complex, global collective of diverse businesses that supply most of the food consumed by the world population. Only subsistence farmers, those who survive on what they grow, and hunter-gatherers can be considered outside of the scope of the modern food industry.
The machine industry or machinery industry is a subsector of the industry, that produces and maintains machines for consumers, the industry, and most other companies in the economy.

This machine industry traditionally belongs to the heavy industry. Nowadays, many smaller companies in this branch are considered part of the light industry....

Assembly line workers won't be swapping stories with their robotic counterparts any time soon, but future robots will be more aware of the humans they're working alongside.

With support from the National Science Foundation (NSF), roboticist and aerospace engineer Julie Shah and her team at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) are developing next generation assembly line robots that are smarter and more adaptable than robots available on today's assembly lines. The team is designing the robots with artificial intelligence that enables them to learn from experience, so the robots will be more responsive to human behavior. The more robots can sense the humans around them and make adjustments, the safer and more effective the robots will be on the assembly line.

The research in this episode is supported by NSF award #1426799, National Robotics Initiative (NRI)/Collaborative Research: Models and Instruments for Integrating Effective Human-Robot Teams into Manufacturing. 2 March 2015

What will the future of manufacturing be like?

Imagine needing a new part for a household appliance. You could order it, get it made locally and get it delivered to your door within a couple of hours.

Advances in 3D Printing and additive manufacturing will reduce waste even more, making it possible to create products and components that we can't make now.

Everything will be connected by the Internet of Things to ensure that supply can keep track of changes in demand.

Robots will take care of the repetitive, dangerous processes so that people can focus on matters where human interaction is so valuable.

So whether you are a manufacturer or a consumer, we are going to see much more manufacturing as part of our everyday lives.

Anything, anywhere

In the next 30 years, we will see manufacturing become more and more unbound from the idea of factories as we know them today. It will be freed up to appear in new locations, becoming an empowering force that drives customisation and personalisation of products across multiple sectors. All of this thanks to 3D printing innovation.

So far, digital transformation has only disrupted two verticals, services and trade. Manufacturing has not suffered serious disruption - until now. Industry 4.0 represents a colossal change where data is not only used to transmit information, but to create objects. 3d printing redefines the implications of manufacturing: orders no longer need to be in the thousands, molds are no longer an issue and orders can be combined amongst companies to save cost. Large companies are investing in printer farms that will offer large industries what server farms represented to online retailing.

Problems and solutions for the manufacturing industry
There are common problems
in the manufacturing industry,
such as quickly and accurately
calculating Available-To-Promise,
eliminating delays of due dates and shortages,
reducing inventories, and
mastering the condition of raw materials.
But, as it is difficult to predict the changes
in the external environment,
