-Ketosis is when your body turns to fat rather than carbohydrates for energy. Sugar Alcohols:
Sugar alcohols are a hybrid between a sugar molecule and an alcohol molecule - but are neither one nor the other. A sugar alcohol is also known as a polyol and can be classified as a carb - most are derived from corn starch from genetically modified corn. Commonly included in most sugar free and “low-carb” products, but they do have a caloric/carb value. Each gram of a sugar alcohol turns into anywhere from less than 1 to as much as 3 calories.
Use of Sugar Alcohols:
Sugar alcohols are slowly and incompletely absorbed in the body. Once they are absorbed they use very little to no insulin to convert to energy as sugar alcohols are incompletely absorbed in the digestive system. A process called “passive diffusion” takes place - sugar alcohols that were consumed draw water into the bowels - results in only partial breakdown. The un-metabolized part of the sugar alcohol starts to rot, which creates a favorable environment for undesirable bacteria and pathogens to thrive and grow.

Low-carb diets have long been symbolic of having “magical” properties when it comes to fat loss, but in reality, it’s no better than any other diet according to every meta-analysis on the totality of scientific evidence.

The ketogenic diet is a low-carb diet as well, but it’s very low-carb, to the point fact where the body begins to use fat as fuel rather than glucose.

Fat isn’t used directly, fat is converted into the fuel source referred to as ketones, such as beta-hydroxybutyrate or BHB. Ketones can cross the blood brain barrier and also fuel the brain.

Typically the ketogenic diet is 5% carbohydrates, 25% protein and 70% fat.

The low carb diet is generally anything less than 25% carbohydrates.

Let’s use an example to clarify the difference between keto and low-carb.

Let’s say that 50g of carbohydrates was your threshold for ketosis, again this is over simplifying it, and 55 g per day would shift you out of ketosis, this 5g difference has a huge impact on your metabolic function; regardless, you’re still in a low-carb (actually a very low-carb diet).

So that’s the crucial difference between keto and low-carb diets.

Can you follow a ketogenic, low carb / high fat diet while breastfeeding? In this video I explain why a reduction of milk doesnt mean your milk is dropping, but perhaps with keto your milk now has higher fat content which will be more satisfying for your baby with less. If you do want to follow a modified keto diet, doing 50 net carbs a day is a good standard. or you and do a "carb up" at night by adding in half a banana or a sweet potato. - don't mind the empty background, I am in the process of moving!! XO
