How I make my 2 part hydroponic liquid nutrients.

Mixing your own from powders would save you a ton of money over the ready made stuff you normally would find at a hydroponics store. Works just as well if not better and you get to control what you put into them.

My General Purpose Recipe:

Part A:
1 gal RO or distilled water
600 grams Masterblend 4-18-38 Tomato Special
300 grams Epsom Salt
1.5 grams Sodium Benzoate as a preservative

Part B:
1 Gal RO or distilled water
1,100 grams Calcium Nitrate (YaraLiva CALCINIT)

The above would make a 250x concentrate (each gallon of concentrate would make 250 gallons of working solution).

I use it at 15ml part A and 15ml part B for each 1 gallon of water.

With RO water you would get an EC of about 2.0 or PPM of 1000 at the 500 scale.

Working strength nutrient breakdown (approximate):

N - 203 ppm
P - 50 ppm
K - 200 ppm
Mg - 45 ppm
Ca - 220 ppm
S - 50 ppm
Fe - 2.5 ppm
Zn - 0.63 ppm
B - 1.27 ppm
Cu - 0.63 ppm
Mo - 0.063 ppm
Mn - 1.27 ppm
Cl - 12.7 ppm

I get a lot of questions about the fertilizer that I am using in my hydroponic setups for growing lettuce and tomatoes. This is a thorough explanation of exactly what I am using. But keep this in mind, there are many different fertilizers on the market, some commercial, some organic. As long as you choose one that allows you to provide the proper nutrients for the plants, you should do just fine. Have fun, and don't be afraid to experiment. ;)

Great nutrient management occurs when growers are:

1) Aware of all necessary plant nutrients and where they come from
2) Supplying adequate nutrients in correct ratios to plants
3) Monitoring and measuring how much of each plant nutrient is available in their system at any given time
4) Making economic and work-flow conscious decisions about how to source and supply nutrients.

Most plants (and all of the crop plants that you’re likely to grow) rely on 16 nutrients to grow and reproduce. Of these, three are available through water uptake and gas exchange (the air): Carbon through CO2, hydrogen, and oxygen.

The remaining thirteen nutrients are the mineral nutrients delivered to plants through nutrient solutions (dissolved fertilizer).

In this video, Ethan Walter with Bright Agrotech explains the basics of N-P-K.

NPK stands for nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. These three numbers represent the ratio of N, P, and K in your fertilizer. Every main mix (complete balance) fertilizer will have these numbers clearly displayed, always in the same order.

Not all fertilizers are complete balanced fertilizers, however. Different ratios of NPK serve different needs. For instance, a blooming mix might have low to no nitrogen in the mix.

So what do each of these nutrients do?
Nitrogen is what makes your plants green, big, and strong. It is the absolute most important nutrient in the solution.
Phosphorus is important for blooming; it plays a role in all of the reproductive roles of your plant.
Potassium is important to plant photosynthesis, CO2 uptake, activation of plant enzymes, and water uptake. It is important for building strong stems and seeds.

N, P, and K are not the only nutrient that your plant needs. Micronutrients are required in much smaller quantities. A complete and balanced fertilizer will almost always include the micronutrients.

I'm doing an experiment to see which water soluble fertilizer works best in a hydroponic setup. This experiment will compare Masterblend, Jacks Triple 20, Base Miracle Grow, and the Miracle Grow Tomato formula.

The goal here is to see if it's possible to use the last 3 fertilizers without any additional supplements, and to compare the overall results. It is not intended to discourage the use of either of them, as they all have situations where they could be of benefit. This is simply a side by side experiment to see how well they do at growing lettuce.

I would like to do some further testing with organic water soluble fertilizers for the folks who prefer to grow organic. Thus far, I haven't found anything except liquid. If you know of an organic water soluble fertilizer, please let me know.

This video serves as a general tutorial to using the "lucas formula" in hydroponics. Simply put, lucas formula is a feeding schedule. Typically, Lucas Formula is based on using General Hydroponics brand 3-part flora series, but It can also be used with other brands of nutrients that come in a 3-part series (Grow Micro Bloom), such as Advanced Nutrients or Fox Farm.

Instead of following the feeding schedule provided by the nutrient manufacture, in our case General Hydroponics, we will use our own (Lucas') modified feeding schedule. Lucas formula DOES NOT use the "GROW" part of the 3-part series. It will only use Micro and Bloom. I've been working on an experiment comparing water soluble fertilizers for hydroponic growing. Here is how it began: http://youtu.be/oeLd2SP0c6U The final results are in. When it comes to hydroponics, Miracle Grow is not recommended because it has a form of nitrogen that is best suited for use in the soil. It does poorly in a hydro application. The 4-18-38 hydroponic fertilizer that I have been using for awhile now absolutely kicks butt. My recommendation for anyone wanting to grow hydroponic vegetables is this: find a true hydroponic fertilizer to use, and leave the Miracle Grow products for the soil. The results speak for themselves.

I've used this system for years now I grow 40 to 60 heads a month of salad greens I this mix solution has given me my the best results. I use General Hydroponics Flora Series, Cal-Mag 2-0-0 - Botanicare and Epsom Salts 2017
