As the debate about the blocksize continues to roar through the Bitcoin community, Gavin Andresen joins us to take a step back and ask the big questions: How should these decisions be made in the first place? What does the governance of Bitcoin look like now and what do we want it to look like in the future?
In a challenging time for Bitcoin, it's a critical discussion to have with the Chief Scientist of the Bitcoin Foundation and successor of Satoshi. We cover everything from the current blocksize debate to the nature of forks to how decisions will be made in Bitcoin XT.
Topics covered included:
- MIT Digital Currency Initiative
- The way Gavin thinks about Bitcoin
- How were decisions made throughout Bitcoin's history
- What the Nakamoto/market consensus is
- Forking the software vs a fork of the blockchain
- Who should make decisions in Bitcoin and how the interest of different stakeholders should be reconciled
- Why the desirable state is to move towards many different implementations
- How decisions will be made for the Bitcoin XT code base

Bitcoin is one of the most talked about but least understood technological innovations of recent years, continuing to draw new backers on Wall Street and Silicon Valley. New York Times reporter Nathaniel Popper's book, Digital Gold, illuminates this confounding technology through the first ever narrative recounting of Bitcoin's dramatic rise to prominence, which benefited from access to all the major players. He will be joined on stage by the programmer who has been leading the Bitcoin project since 2010, Gavin Andresen, and one of the biggest venture capitalists to back the technology, Fred Wilson of Union Square Ventures. The conversation will be instigated by New York Times columnist and CNBC anchor Andrew Ross Sorkin.
GAVIN ANDRESEN is the Chief Scientist at the Bitcoin Foundation and is one of the longest serving and most widely respected developers of the Bitcoin protocol. Prior to this, he wrote 3D graphics software in Silicon Valley.

Satoshi Nakamotos Confidant Gavin Andresen Throws Support Behind Bitcoin Cash Gavin Andresen is the latest significant player in bitcoin to pledge support for bitcoin cash, referring to it as the chain most true to Satoshis original vision. In a tweet published on the 12th of November, Andresen has emphasized his belief that the high fees associated with BTC are undermining it as an effective means of exchange. “Bitcoin Cash Is What I Started Working on in 2010: A Store of Value and Means of Exchange. ”Former lead developer for bitcoin, Gavin Andresen, has thrown his support behind bitcoin cash. In a recent tweet, Andresen has published a comment effectively describing bitcoin cash as the successor to his early work on the bitcoin project. Andresens tweet speaks to the core utilities requisite of a money commodity, emphasizing the threat the high fees pose to bitcoins core mission of providing a fast and frictionless decentralized means of payment that is available for use by all. For many, without facilitating reduced barriers to access and ease of use for microtransactions, bitcoin runs the risk of...

In the span of just a few short years, Bitcoin has grown from a peripheral open-source project into a major catalyst for the development of decentralized, trustless digital payments and contracts. In the spirit of the Internet's wide reach, this technology has the potential to positively impact billions of people and become a crucial part of daily life. In spite of Bitcoin’s rapid growth, the path to widespread adoption remains challenging, and many tough decisions will need to be made in order to ensure the technology’s long-term success. At the core of this decision-making process is a small group of developers who are the stewards of Bitcoin’s core software—security software that helps protect assets worth billions of dollars, as well as the delicate trust in Bitcoin’s decentralized infrastructure. Join us for a conversation with three of these core developers—Gavin Andresen, Cory Fields, and Wladimir van der Laan—to discuss ongoing debates about Bitcoin’s development and future success.
Gavin Andresen was the lead maintainer of the Bitcoin open source software project after its creator, Satoshi Nakamoto, disappeared. He is currently a software developer at the MIT Digital Currency Initiative, and still serves as the Chief Scientist...

Gavin Andresen Drops A New Concept On Github for Bitcoin CashOn January 2 one of the most well-known developers for the original bitcoin protocol, Gavin Andresen, contributed an idea to Github called “Storing the UTXO as a bit-vector.” Andresen has been active on Github for the past month as his contributions have been focused on general (Unspent Transaction Output) UTXO sets, but this particular idea is for the Bitcoin Cash (BCH) network.
The Developer Who Was Given the BTC Codebase Permissions from Satoshi Offers an Idea for BCH Network
Gavin Andresen has beenGithub for the past twenty-seven days, and on the second day of the new year, the developer contributed an idea for the BCH network. TheAndresen called “Half-baked thoughts exploring a different way of implementing a fully-validating BCH node,” is an idea on shifting the storage of full transaction data to wallets. The developer explains the concept is to let every node in the new network store a bit-vector for every block which can be highly compressible even for gigabyte-sized blocks.
“This isn’t a problem today (the UTXO set easily fits in the RAM of an inexpensive server-class machine), but might eventually be at very large transaction volumes,” explains...

CME Group talk about Bitcoin was initially led by Satoshi Nakamoto. Nakamoto stepped back in 2010 and handed the network alert key to Gavin Andresen. Andresen stated he subsequently sought to decentralize control stating: "As soon as Satoshi stepped back and threw the project onto my shoulders, one of the first things I did was try to decentralize that. So, if I get hit by a bus, it would be clear that the project would go on." This left opportunity for controversy to develop over the future development path of bitcoin.
Main article: Bitcoin scalability problem
The blocks in the blockchain are limited to one megabyte in size, which has created problems for bitcoin transaction processing, such as increasing transaction fees and delayed processing of transactions that cannot be fit into a block. On 24 August 2017 (at block 481,824), Segregated Witness went live, increasing maximum block capacity and making transaction IDs immutable.[better source needed] SegWit also allows the implementation of the Lightning Network, a second-layer proposal for scalability with instantaneous transactions
