In the future a wave of biologic super-enhancements will make you and me faster, smarter, stronger and healthier… but what about BETTER? Can science enhance our moral character the same way it can enhance our physical character? Imagine a world where people are hard wired for good, where crime, greed and war cease to exist. In a sense, we’d all be superheroes! But who decides what’s moral? Are concepts of morality too fluid to force on a society? And what about free will? This week we look at the thorny issue of moral bioenhancements!

What do you think? Would moral bioenhancements improve the world, or is the word ‘enhancement’ not applicable in this case? Share your thoughts below!

In the U.S. alone in 2014, over 14 thousand people died from overdoses involving prescription opioids, according to the CDC. A national survey that year reported that almost 2 million Americans were abusing or physically dependent on prescription opioids. A thousand Americans go to the emergency room every day for misusing these drugs.

So how can we solve the problem of pain in a way that doesn't create a host of new problems on its own?

In this episode we look at the future of pain management - everything from using spider toxins to growing new neurons from a patient's tissue using stem cell technologies, and because pain changes our brain's connections and chemistry, we also discuss the biggest player in the way we experience pain: The Mind.

If science gave you the chance, would you sign up for a procedure that made pain emotionally neutral information? Or do you think that without the distress, you wouldn't seek treatment for the pain's cause?

When we launched this channel, our very first episode was about the Internet of Things, and how this technology might affect our day-to-day lives at home. Now, over 100 episodes later (when did THAT happen?!) we felt it was time to give this topic an update. What happens when the Internet of Things goes global, and what will we need to do for us to reach this vision of the future?

Ever since humans have looked up at the stars, we've dreamed of taking our place among them. But there's just one small problem, and it's a big one- those stars are insanely far away. Science fiction writers have solved the problem with the "warp drive," which allows future humans to travel faster than light, crossing the vast emptiness of space. But, sadly, it's purely a thing of fantasy... Or is it?

Here on Fw:Thinking we’ve talked a lot about some pretty disruptive ideas. 3D printing. Artificial intelligence. Automation. These ideas have the potential to revolutionize our world. But revolutions aren’t necessarily known for being smooth and painless.

One of the big questions left to answer is how will we make a living in a world where more of our work is left to the cold, robotic hands of automated machinery? The robots aren’t exactly poised to displace everyone tomorrow but that day is coming. So what then? How do we make ends meet? How do we buy the things we want or have the experiences we dream about?

In a previous episode, we explored the idea of a future without money. But that future will require some pretty huge changes in the way we live. Between now and then, another possibility is basic income.

How would you address the problems of poverty and the loss of jobs in an increasingly automated world? We want to hear your ideas in the comments below.

What will it be like to be human one hundred years from now? It's a hard question. Some fields of science progress at breakneck speed while others languish behind for what feels like an eternity (I'm looking at you battery technology). Today we give this question our best guess - what will it mean to be human a century from now? Will everyone's brain be wirelessly connected to the 2116 internet? Will illness and disease be a thing of the past? Will you be an immortal cyborg?? Come along with us as we explore the possibilities and make our predictions!

The next generation of architecture won't just be smarter by design, it'll actually BE smart. Cognitive buildings are structures that utilize the internet of things to anticipate our needs. Not only that, they greatly reduce our carbon footprints by autonomously reducing energy consumption in spaces that aren't in use. No need to turn off the lights or air conditioning before you leave a room! Beyond that, cognitive buildings can keep us healthier and safer by strategically controlling air flow and air pressure around those who might be carrying contagious pathogens, and can alert us to maintenance needs before they become expensive or even deadly system failures.

We want to hear from you! If you were designing the building of the future, what one thing would absolutely have to be inside of it? Let us know in the comments below!

What if you could fax someone a real, three-dimensional object? The solution might come in the form of programmable matter - a material that takes on predetermined shapes and can change its configuration on demand. We’re already seeing early prototypes coming from Carnegie Mellon and Intel in the form of “claytronics.” So what’s in store for this technology, and why should we be excited about it?

If you had a vat of claytronic atoms in front of you, what’s the first thing you’d build with it? Let us know in the comments below!

Leonard Nimoy’s legendary performance of Mr. Spock in the Star Trek franchise created an icon in science fiction, and we here at Fw:Thinking are all sad to see him gone. As a way to honor his memory, we decided to ask a very Star Trek question, “In the future, will we have money?” Is our technology bringing us closer to Gene Roddenberry’s vision of a world that isn’t driven by wealth?

Do you think money will still be around in the future, or will it disappear? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!

DARPA unveiled plans to invest $60 million over the next four years in a program to bridge the gap between the human brain and computers. The goal is to develop a biocompatible device capable of translating thought into computer code at rapid speed. The potential applications of such technology are awesome - from therapies that could help a blind person to see, to a world where people can interface with computers just by thinking!

Is this a precursor to cyborgs? Do you envision a future where enhanced human beings will interact seamlessly with the technology around them?

Google's AI lab recently announced that it had developed a quantum computer with 100 million times the processing speed of an average computer chip. So what is a quantum computer? In this episode, Jonathan takes us on a journey inside quantum computing, where problems are solved in a massively parallel process rather than in sequence.

What futuristic computing gets you really excited? Quantum computing? DNA computing?

Talk about it with us in the comments below!

Happy national robotics week everyone! This week we celebrate US robotics technology, and educate the importance of robots in society, both now and in our future. We got a chance to visit the Georgia Institute of Technology robotics labs, and sit down with Dr. Henrik Christensen -- one of the leading thinkers in robotics, and one of the authors of the Roadmap for U.S. Robotics -- to talk about the future of robots in manufacturing, medicine, space exploration, and more!

Have you ever worked with a robot or built your own? If so, let us know all the details in the comments below! And if you haven't, what kind of robot WOULD you build if you were given the chance?

It wasn't that long ago when the thought of autonomous cars were unimaginable to anyone not named Hasselhoff. But lets fast forward to a couple of months ago when Google's CEO Larry Page decided to send a car around to pick up a friend of his. This car had one special feature. There was no chauffeur. No driver at all. The car drove Larry's friend twenty miles to Google, without a driver.

We've been dreaming about this for decades. In fact, if you had gone to the World's Fair back in 1939, you might have...

As robots become ever more advanced, at what point will having a romantic relationship with a robot be the norm?

With every passing year robots and artificial intelligence become more life-like and more sophisticated. But how does that affect romance? Experts are predicting that within the next 20-40 years we’ll see the first relationship bots hit store shelves, and that got us wondering… at what point will a relationship with a robot be the considered cheating?
