What happens when the way we buy, sell and pay for things changes, perhaps even removing the need for banks or currency exchange bureaus? That's the radical promise of a world powered by cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin and Ethereum. We're not there yet, but in this sparky talk, digital currency researcher Neha Narula describes the collective fiction of money — and paints a picture of a very different looking future.

Bitcoin and blockchains: The future of money explained with ancient stones on the tiny Pacific island of Yap.
Ethereum, Bitcoin and other blockchains are being called the future of money. This decentralized, digital money aims to replace physical cash and middlemen like VISA or your bank.
But is this really such a new idea? We travelled to the remote Pacific island of Yap, where an ancient form of stone money has more in common with the future than you'd think.

Best-selling author Kabir Sehgal explores the future of money during the age of space exploration. How will we pay to tour the galaxy? What form of currency will reign dominant in the year 2515? Sehgal goes on to explain why it's better to pay attention to predictions of science-fiction than those of economists. Sehgal is author of The New York Times Bestseller Coined: The Rich Life of Money and How Its History Has Shaped Us.

Transcript: So what will our currency be 500 years from now? I like to think that we might be space tourists and space travel is going well. And what will we use as currency in space? Well, you know, if you we do a transaction in space the distances are quite far. So if you're on one planet and I'm on another planet and we do a transaction, considering the theory of relativity like how do you calculate interest rates and what time is relative? Where do you put that clock to calculate interest rates? You would have to build arguably a distributed network throughout the galaxy so that when you're doing the transactions you could...

Financial services and fintech startups are innovating across broad categories — in core banking, new financial services (both ones that banks traditional provided, but also ones they don’t), insurance, and investing. So what’s driving this change? And how do these startups successfully attack and compete with the big incumbent entities? What makes it possible — from new data sources that can provide more information on lending risk to being unencumbered by old legacy infrastructures?
In this talk, recorded earlier this year in London, a16z general partner Alex Rampell considers all the types of innovation in financial services, and how the market is expanding.

Recorded 28th November 2017
The socio-economic debate surrounding money has advanced since the early metallist days of John Locke. Money is no longer viewed as an homogenous, neutral thing; rather, theorists are wont to emphasise its pivotal role in shaping networks of social relations.
Yet, in many respects, the legal analysis of money is playing catch-up, and the advent of distributed online ecosystems such as Bitcoin and Ethereum has pushed to the fore some difficult questions concerning the appropriate legal lens through which to view money, and monetary assets. If we are to produce robust answers, these questions must be explored with the benefit of interdisciplinary insight. In this conversation, law meets sociology in an attempt to lay the foundation for confronting some of these challenges.

One year from Today Uranus will move out of Aries and into Taurus...
from 2018-2026. The Future of Money and World Trade.
The Last time Uranus was in Taurus was 1934 to 1942 I think of the heart of the depression, the dust bowl, WW2, fascism and crazy dictators collectively. It was an era of shifting global realities and uncertainty
Taurus, the second sign of the Zodiac symbolizes acquisitions and symbolically reigns with the Scorpion over the world of finance, with the difference that Taurus refers to the properties of gardens, the agricultural world and the land of nourishment. It symbolizes the soil and everything that grows there, hatches, flowers and consumes itself. The Taurus evokes the edible.

It's been said that cash is king, but lately it's been getting a little competition from a currency you can't see. It's called Bitcoin. Despite its name, you can't hold it in your hand. It's a digital form of money that only exists in cyberspace, sent globally from one computer to another. You can buy Bitcoin online. The currency is then stored in a digital wallet on your computer. There are no rules or regulations. It's not connected to any bank or government, which suits Bitcoin's anti-establishment advocates just fine. Alexis Christoforous reports.
