Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is a psychotherapeutic approach that addresses dysfunctional emotions, maladaptive behaviors and cognitive processes and contents through a number of goal-oriented, explicit systematic procedures. The name refers to behavior therapy, cognitive therapy, and to therapy based upon a combination of basic behavioral and cognitive principles and research. Most therapists working with patients dealing with anxiety and depression use a blend of cognitive and behavioral therapy. This technique acknowledges that there may be behaviors that cannot be controlled through rational thought. CBT is "problem focused" (undertaken for specific problems such as anger
) and "action oriented" (therapist tries to assist the client in selecting specific strategies to help address those problems).

Case study example for use in teaching, aiming to demonstrate some of the triggers, thoughts, feelings and responses linked with problematic low mood. This section here represents the first 14 minutes of an initial therapy session, but in order to try and outline the vicious cycle, it moves faster than an average session might. The video features an actor playing the character of Lucy, but the dialogue is not scripted, and as such represents a natural therapeutic exchange. I myself am a qualified Clinical Psychologist, but would definitely not suggest that this is a perfect example of therapy!

This video was produced as a collaboration between the University of Leeds and Leeds Trinity University (Ricardo Barker).

What is cognitive behavioral therapy for anxiety? In this video we will give you a complete overview of how cognitive behavioral therapy works and try to answer the question 'what is CBT?' once and for all.

In a nutshell cognitive behavioral therapy (or CBT) is a commonly recommended and used therapy that can do wonders for reducing and minimizing anxiety levels.

CBT therapy must be done by a trained professional and works by teaching the patient techniques that allow them to see the connection between their negative thoughts and mood.

Those who are suffering from disorders like generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder and social anxiety disorder can benefit greatly from CBT therapy.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, or CBT, is a form of intervention widely used in psychotherapy, counseling and life coaching. CBT provides the right tools and support to engage a powerful process of change without wasting a massive amount of time and energy.
The reason why CBT is so popular is simple: it works incredibly well. A good amount of scientific research shows how effective CBT is in helping people solve problems and experience positive outcomes.
CBT is aimed at changing patterns of thinking and behavior that keep us stuck and prevent us from overcoming the obstacles we face.
First, CBT (Cognitive Behavior Therapy) intervenes on our thoughts. The way we think influences our lives, because it defines how we understand and intepret the world and the events. In this sense, our thinking pattern can be imagined as a pair of glasses that allows us to see the world in a certain way. It is useful to work on our thoughts and beliefs to deal with issues such as depression, anxiety, and others. Let’s say I have low self-esteem and my thoughts about myself are unrealistically negative: I believe I’m a worthless person, whose needs are irrelevant and whose opinions uninteresting. First, CBT (Cognitive Behavior Therapy) allows...

So cognitive behavioral therapy is one of the best ways to treat insomnia. It's been shown to improve insomnia much better in the long run than the use of medications. This involves different aspects of cognitive behavioral therapy, which include relaxation techniques, using medication, or relaxation therapy, imagery to help you relax and night and help with sleep onset.

It also uses sleep restriction, which involves taking away time that you're lying awake in bed. For example, if you're sleeping six hours, but you're lying awake in bed for two extra hours and spending eight hours in bed in the hopes of getting more sleep, you are disassociating your bedroom with the feeling of sleepiness. So taking away that time will also induce a little bit of sleep deprivation, which will help you get a more consolidated, deeper sleep.

There's also stimulus control, which involves taking away doing any other activity besides sleep away from your bedroom. You know, you're not supposed to be lying awake and reading in bed or watching TV because you start to disassociate your bedroom with the feeling of sleepiness.

The ABC model of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) explains why you think the things you think, why you feel the way you feel, and why you do the things you do. When we learn to use the ABC model, we can begin to intervene and take control of our thoughts, feelings, and behaviors.

CBT is an approach to psychotherapy where an individual learns to recognize their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, and how they all relate to one another. The ABC model is at the core of the CBT theory.

This video gives an overview of how to use the ABC model while providing examples.

Here are 5 of my favorite Big Ideas from "The Philosophy of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy" by Donald Robertson. Hope you enjoy!

Got problems with your soul? These days, you’d see a psychotherapist. But, back in the day, it was the philosopher who’d help you optimize—they were the preferred physician of the soul. This book is about the philosophical roots of modern psychotherapy. Specifically, it outlines the connection between cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and Stoicism. Big Ideas we explore include being a warrior of the mind vs. a librarian of the mind, your highest human purpose, getting on good terms with your inner daimon, practicing the reserve clause and modeling your ideal sage.
