The Rise of China Mini-Documentary | Episode 1 | China's Economic Miracle

Two centuries ago, Napoleon warned, “Let China sleep: when she wakes, she will shake the world.”

The rise of China will undoubtedly be one of the great dramas of the twenty-first century. China's extraordinary economic growth and active diplomacy are already transforming East Asia, and future decades will see even greater increases in Chinese power and influence.

In this episode we will look only at the sheer size of China today. We will then look at it’s threats, challenges and confrontations with America in future episodes.

In 1980, China’s gross domestic product (GDP) was less than 300 billion dollars; by 2015, it was 11 trillion dollars—making it the world’s second-largest economy by market exchange rates. China’s trade with the outside world in 1980 amounted to less than 40 billion dollars; by 2015, it had increased one hundredfold, to a whopping 4 trillion dollars.

Even at its lower growth rate in 2015, China’s economy created a Greece every sixteen weeks and an Israel every twenty-five weeks.

Measured by purchasing power parity, which measures how many aircraft, missiles, ships, sailors, pilots, drones, bases, and...

The town of Arcadia California has gained the nickname "the Chinese Beverly Hills". Peggy Fong Chen, who makes a living selling high priced real estate in Arcadia, says that almost all of her buyers are from mainland China. She also pointed out that almost all of her clients pay for their multi million dollar homes in cash. Many Chinese billionaires buy these homes along with exotic cars for their children who are often sent to American colleges. Others use these mansions for the less wholesome purpose of housing their mistresses. Whatever their reasons may be the Chinese elite are buying up American real estate to the tune of $22 billion last year alone.

U.S. stocks rose more than 1 percent in early trading on Wednesday, rebounding from steep losses a day earlier, after fresh intervention from China to support its markets helped ease a global equities selloff. Wall Street closed sharply lower on Tuesday, with renewed concerns about China's economy pushing major indexes down almost 3 percent and intensifying fears of a long-term selloff. But Chinese stocks moved off steep losses to end almost flat on Wednesday after Chinese brokerages stepped up to buy shares, answering government calls to support the stock market and helping calm jittery investors.

CHINA'S 100,000 COW MEGA FARMS - China Mega Size Dairy Farms With No Care About Environmental Impact

China's mega-farm… for 100,000 cows: World's biggest dairy being built to supply Russian demand after Moscow boycotted EU exports

Farm in Mudanjiang City will have 60,000 more cows than current biggest Russia wants milk as it's boycotting EU countries' milk and dairy exports It will be 50 times bigger than the UK's biggest, which has 2,000 cows

Mansel Raymond, chairman of Copa-Cogeca, the umbrella organisation for European farmers, said the ban and the Chino-Russian dairy venture sent a worrying signal to Europe's dairy farmers.

'The scale of Chinese investment in dairy production is vast. I wonder now whether we will ever get the Russian milk market back,' he told Farmers Weekly. Giant piles of black manure towering over cornfields, while rancid-smelling effluent from thousands of cows spills onto the land—this is the price of a glass of milk in China today.

Large-scale dairy farms have boomed in the Asian giant, as its near 1.4 billion consumers overcame centuries of cultural reluctance to embrace the white...

This is the first military parade ever held to mark the founding of the PLA. Yangsi, a remote village in southwest China's Sichuan Province, has baffling scientists for decades. Around 40 percent of its inhabitants are several heads shorter than the average human being. 36 of the village's 80 residents are dwarfs -- the tallest one is about 3 ft. 10 inches tall and the shortest, 2 ft. 1 inch. That's too large a percentage to be categorized as random occurrence, but so far no one has been able to provide a better explanation.

Today, because of the large number of height-challenged residents, Yangsi is known as the 'Village of Dwarfs'. According to village elders, their peaceful, happy life was ruined on a summer night many years ago, when a vile disease struck the region. Several locals suffered from a mysterious condition that mainly affected young children between the ages of 5 and 7. These children just stopped growing, remaining at the same height for the rest of their lives. Apart from their inability to grow taller, some of the victims also suffered from various disabilities.

Scientists and experts visited Yangsi, to study the water, soil, and grain in the region. They also examined the affected individuals in the hopes of gathering a few clues. However, they were unable to determine the...

일할 사람이 줄어든다, 중국은 2014년부터 한국은 2017년부터
China's economic slowdown has been well-documented,... as have the reasons for it.
One of the driving forces behind China's explosive growth over the past couple of decades has been its gigantic workforce.
But those golden days appear to be over... as our Park Jong-hong reports.
For the first time in a quarter-of-a-century,... China's economy failed to grow more than seven percent last year.
For years, China has been propelled by a vast source of cheap workers unmatched anywhere in the world.
But times are changing.
In fact, the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences says China's so-called "demographic bonus" is over.
Demographic bonus refers to a country's economic growth potential when the working-age population is larger than the non-working-age of 14 and younger, and 65 and older.
In 2013, China's working-age group peaked at more than one billion,... but since then,... the figure has been heading south.
By contrast, the number of elderly Chinese is rising fast.
Their number surged by more than 12 million over the course of two years to nearly 144 million in 2015.
The trend is adding to concerns about the slowdown in China.
Some global...

Speculative buyers have eschewed Chinese stocks in favor of property, prompting even the chief economist at the central bank of the world's second largest economy to declare that housing was in a "bubble."
But when strategists at UBS AG recently compiled a list of bubblicious housing markets, there weren't any selections from mainland China due to the lack of reliable data on the subject, underscoring the continued difficulty in declaring Chinese real estate to be in overheated territory.
But Deutsche Bank AG Chief China Economist Zhiwei Zhang thinks he's pinpointed "a clear sign of a bubble" in the market — one that will end in a major correction in two years' time.
After analyzing how much developers were willing to spend to win land auctions in 10 major Chinese cities in which values are already up 23 percent year-over-year, the economist found that the business case for these bids evaporates unless property prices continue to increase.

Hop on and find out!

Living in China for so long, we would like to share some of the comparisons that we have found between...

The heftier expansion is the first growth bump in seven years. Is this a sign of better times ahead? The Ka-Ching Dynasty! - China. From communism to capitalism, a new generation of very young, very rich people have emerged, but where did they come from? Subscribe to journeyman for daily uploads: http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=journeymanpictures

The economic transformation of China has been electrifying. But with Europe teetering and the US plodding, can the biggest tiger of all keep on roaring? China's super-rich certainly think they can.

Outside a private Beijing nightclub Porsches, Maseratis and Ferraris compete for space. Inside the club is packed with the children of China's super-rich enjoying a 'palace' themed party. China now has almost a million millionaires, six hundred billionaires, and the numbers keep growing at a staggering rate. As a reporter for the Hurun Report rich-list points out, they are a force to be reckoned with: "certainly we need to be aware of and understand this group."

Even more striking is the bravado of China's super-rich, who feel that they can keep going from strength to strength. "I met an entrepreneur last week who said that if all goes to plan, in ten years time his business will be ten times the size it is now". The focus is certainly on quick growth. Current projections say that in ten...

Trading on the Shanghai and Shenzhen stock markets was ended at 1:28 p.m. Monday after shares tumbled 7 percent, triggering the new "circuit breaker" mechanism on the first trading day of 2016.

The early end to trading, the first in the history of China's stock markets, coincided with the launch of the circuit breaker, designed to contain wild swings in the markets.

The mechanism follows the Hushen 300 Index, which reflects the performance of both Shanghai and Shenzhen traded stocks.

When the index rises or falls by 5 percent, the circuit breaker imposes a 15-minute suspension in trading. If the Hushen 300 declines by over 7 percent, trading is terminated for the day.

At 1:13 p.m., trading was suspended for 15 minutes and, immediately on reopening at 1:28 p.m., the index fell a further 2 percent and trading ceased.

When trading closed, the Shanghai Composite Index was down 6.85 percent, the smaller Shenzhen index down 8.16 percent, and the ChiNext Index, China's NASDAQ-style board of growth enterprises, down 8.21 percent.

The slump is generally being attributed to weaker than expected manufacturing activity in December and a steep fall in the yuan exchange rate.

Much of it is landing up in the U.S. where many children of the wealthy elite are sent to get an American college education — and they’re living large. Vocativ found a sub-culture of these Chinese students in California. They drive luxury cars like Maseratis and Ferraris and flaunt their wealth at discreet private parties and in online groups, like "Super Cars in America”.

China's express delivery volume achieved an average annual growth of 53 percent since 2012, ranking first in the world for three consecutive years, according to a press conference held by State Post Bureau of The People's Republic of China Monday.

There are 20,000 corporate enterprises with over two million employees in China so far. China's express delivery volume occupies 40 percent of the world, has 217,000 branches and a township coverage rate which exceeds 86 percent. After the 18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China (CPC) held in 2012 in Beijing, China revised its Postal Law twice and has gradually improved their postal service regulation system. Within five years, the average price of the postal service declined from 18.5 yuan per parcel to 12.7 per parcel, decreasing 31 percent. Also, the average number of customers using postal service daily exceeded 300 million.

In addition, the Chinese mail business has a greater say and participation in international regulations. China established a mechanism for mail transportation of China-Europe freight trains and is preparing to set up a global delivery network.

China has undergone a breathtaking economic and social transformation during the past three decades. Even though the global economic crisis put a dent in exports, a massive government stimulus cushioned the Chinese economy from the worst of the downturn. Through spending on roads, infrastructure, and health, the government supported the country's economic output, helping the country sustain its growth rate.

Yet many challenges still lie ahead on the road to prosperity. For instance, China needs to boost domestic consumption and create a stronger social safety net for its 1.3 billion people.

"China has grown about 9½ percent on average every year for 30 years, and that implies that the Chinese economy doubles in size about every 8 years."
