The Rise of China Mini-Documentary | Episode 1 | China's Economic Miracle

Two centuries ago, Napoleon warned, “Let China sleep: when she wakes, she will shake the world.”

The rise of China will undoubtedly be one of the great dramas of the twenty-first century. China's extraordinary economic growth and active diplomacy are already transforming East Asia, and future decades will see even greater increases in Chinese power and influence.

In this episode we will look only at the sheer size of China today. We will then look at it’s threats, challenges and confrontations with America in future episodes.

In 1980, China’s gross domestic product (GDP) was less than 300 billion dollars; by 2015, it was 11 trillion dollars—making it the world’s second-largest economy by market exchange rates. China’s trade with the outside world in 1980 amounted to less than 40 billion dollars; by 2015, it had increased one hundredfold, to a whopping 4 trillion dollars.

Even at its lower growth rate in 2015, China’s economy created a Greece every sixteen weeks and an Israel every twenty-five weeks.

This 80-minute documentary focuses on the growing "wealth gap" in America, as seen through the eyes of filmmaker Jamie Johnson, a 27-year-old heir to the Johnson & Johnson pharmaceutical fortune. Johnson, who cut his film teeth at NYU and made the Emmy®-nominated 2003 HBO documentary Born Rich, here sets his sights on exploring the political, moral and emotional rationale that enables a tiny percentage of Americans - the one percent - to control nearly half the wealth of the entire United States. The film Includes interviews with Nicole Buffett, Bill Gates Sr., Adnan Khashoggi, Milton Friedman, Robert Reich, Ralph Nader and other luminaries.

The town of Arcadia California has gained the nickname "the Chinese Beverly Hills". Peggy Fong Chen, who makes a living selling high priced real estate in Arcadia, says that almost all of her buyers are from mainland China. She also pointed out that almost all of her clients pay for their multi million dollar homes in cash. Many Chinese billionaires buy these homes along with exotic cars for their children who are often sent to American colleges. Others use these mansions for the less wholesome purpose of housing their mistresses. Whatever their reasons may be the Chinese elite are buying up American real estate to the tune of $22 billion last year alone.

China said on Monday its military budget this year would grow 8.1 percent from 2017, a larger increase than the previous two years even as the country kept its overall economic growth target the same.

The 2018 defense budget will be 1.11 trillion yuan ($175 billion), according to a budget report issued at the opening of the country's annual meeting of parliament.

Last year the defense budget was set to increase by just 7 percent, to 1.044 trillion yuan ($164.60 billion) about one-quarter of the proposed U.S. defense spending for the year.

The budget increase, a figure that is closely watched around the world for clues to China's strategic intentions, comes as economic growth has picked up, expanded 6.9 percent last year, the first acceleration in annual growth since 2010.

China kept its 2018 economic growth target at around 6.5 percent, Premier Li Keqiang said in remarks prepared for delivery at the parliament's opening session, the same as in 2017 despite the pick up in growth.

China will "advance all aspects of military training and war preparedness, and firmly and resolvedly safeguard national sovereignty, security, and development interests," Li said.

"Faced with profound changes in the national security...

BAKU - At a time when much of the West is distracted by faltering economic integration, renewed protectionism, and short-term policies, China is connecting with the outside world through a series of long-term economic investments. The project, known as the Belt and Road initiative, spans 68 countries through several land corridors and maritime routes. It covers about 65 percent of the world's population, which equals 40 percent of the global GDP. It is nothing less than the most ambitious geo-economic project in recent history, and it seeks to revive the ancient Silk Road.

Donald Trump flayed China and called it a Currency Manipulator in his Speech. - On April 2016, a Treasury report targets five countries in particular: China, Japan, Korea, Taiwan and Germany. Each meets at least two of the three criteria that "determine whether an economy may be pursuing foreign exchange policies that could give it an unfair competitive advantage against the United States."

At a time when currency devaluation has become a major tool used by multiple countries to stimulate growth, the U.S. is looking to protect its own interests. The report is an outgrowth of the Trade Facilitation and Trade Enforcement Act of 2015, a bipartisan effort aimed at stemming the global race to the bottom.

The criteria to determine whether a country should be on the "Monitoring List" of countries using unfair currency practices are: a trade surplus of larger than $20 billion, or 0.1 percent of U.S. GDP; a trade surplus with the U.S. that is more than 3 percent of that country's GDP; "persistent one-sided intervention," defined as purchases of foreign currency amounting to more than 2 percent of the country's GDP in a one-year period.

CHINA'S 100,000 COW MEGA FARMS - China Mega Size Dairy Farms With No Care About Environmental Impact

China's mega-farm… for 100,000 cows: World's biggest dairy being built to supply Russian demand after Moscow boycotted EU exports

Farm in Mudanjiang City will have 60,000 more cows than current biggest Russia wants milk as it's boycotting EU countries' milk and dairy exports It will be 50 times bigger than the UK's biggest, which has 2,000 cows

Mansel Raymond, chairman of Copa-Cogeca, the umbrella organisation for European farmers, said the ban and the Chino-Russian dairy venture sent a worrying signal to Europe's dairy farmers.

'The scale of Chinese investment in dairy production is vast. I wonder now whether we will ever get the Russian milk market back,' he told Farmers Weekly. Giant piles of black manure towering over cornfields, while rancid-smelling effluent from thousands of cows spills onto the land—this is the price of a glass of milk in China today.

Large-scale dairy farms have boomed in the Asian giant, as its near 1.4 billion consumers overcame centuries of cultural reluctance to embrace the white...

China has undergone a breathtaking economic and social transformation during the past three decades. Even though the global economic crisis put a dent in exports, a massive government stimulus cushioned the Chinese economy from the worst of the downturn. Through spending on roads, infrastructure, and health, the government supported the country's economic output, helping the country sustain its growth rate.

Yet many challenges still lie ahead on the road to prosperity. For instance, China needs to boost domestic consumption and create a stronger social safety net for its 1.3 billion people.

"China has grown about 9½ percent on average every year for 30 years, and that implies that the Chinese economy doubles in size about every 8 years."

The long-delayed $1.1bn sale of a 70 percent stake in Sri Lanka's Hambantota port, which straddles the world's busiest east-west shipping route, has been signed off in Colombo.

It will help Sri Lanka get on top of mounting debts and adds another important link in China's 'New Silk Road'.

But many in Sri Lanka see it as a sell out, and India is worried about China moving into its backyard.

Can Sri Lanka keep its worried neighbours on its side, while trying to play a bigger role in China's ambitious trade plans?

일할 사람이 줄어든다, 중국은 2014년부터 한국은 2017년부터
China's economic slowdown has been well-documented,... as have the reasons for it.
One of the driving forces behind China's explosive growth over the past couple of decades has been its gigantic workforce.
But those golden days appear to be over... as our Park Jong-hong reports.
For the first time in a quarter-of-a-century,... China's economy failed to grow more than seven percent last year.
For years, China has been propelled by a vast source of cheap workers unmatched anywhere in the world.
But times are changing.
In fact, the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences says China's so-called "demographic bonus" is over.
Demographic bonus refers to a country's economic growth potential when the working-age population is larger than the non-working-age of 14 and younger, and 65 and older.
In 2013, China's working-age group peaked at more than one billion,... but since then,... the figure has been heading south.
By contrast, the number of elderly Chinese is rising fast.
Their number surged by more than 12 million over the course of two years to nearly 144 million in 2015.
The trend is adding to concerns about the slowdown in China.

China has pledged to extend land use contracts for farmers for another 30 years. Chinese President Xi Jinping laid out a policy blueprint for agriculture and rural area development in his report delivered to the 19th CPC National Congress two weeks ago. With only ten percent of the world's arable land, China produces food for 20 percent of the world's population. It deems agriculture key to the stability of the country and the well being of its people. In recent years, China has applied more technological innovations in agriculture to maintain sustainable growth.

Can breakthroughs in food production keep pace with the world's growing population? We turn to our panel to find out: Shi Yan, executive director of the Shared Harvest CSA Farm in Beijing; Liu Baocheng, dean of the Center for International Business Ethics from the University of International Business and Economics; and Holly Wang, agricultural economics professor at Purdue University in the US, who’s also with the (Qianren) Global Expert Program of China Academy of Agricultural Sciences.

Pork farmers in the United States are beginning to feel the impact of a new 25 percent tariff on their products that has been proposed by China.

It has driven American pork prices down.

The new tariffs were sparked by US President Donald Trump's plan to impose duties on $60bn worth of Chinese goods, including steel.

Al Jazeera's John Hendren reports from Chicago.

Have you ever seen a more human-like animal?

Not according to Dr Long Yongcheng, the Chinese primatologist who has spent 25 years studying, and working to conserve, Yunnan’s snub-nosed monkeys.

Until the 1960s, it was believed these primates, also known as golden monkeys, were extinct. But in the last 20 years, their numbers have doubled to an estimated 3000 (according to the Nature Conservancy) in protected parts of Yunnan’s forests, an area sometimes known as Shangri-la, on the edge of the Tibetan plateau.

Dr Long Yongcheng affectionately calls them ‘the snubbies’.
His research, alongside work from international primatologists including the University of Illinois’ Dr Paul Garber, has helped unlock clues to understanding their biology and behavior.

Typically, a family includes one adult male and as many females as he can attract, sometimes up-to 9! You can spot the male by the long hairs on its rump and also by its stature - he can be twice the size and triple the weight of his wife!

Inevitably, the family will also have offspring (a female gives birth every 2 or 3 years), which dad… passively accepts!

And yes, the babies are impossibly cute – watch Baby Bai learning to climb here:

China's stock markets suspended as shares tumble 7 percent

Trading on the Shanghai and Shenzhen stock markets was ended at 1:28 p.m. Monday after shares tumbled 7 percent, triggering the new "circuit breaker" mechanism on the first trading day of 2016.

The early end to trading, the first in the history of China's stock markets, coincided with the launch of the circuit breaker, designed to contain wild swings in the markets.

The mechanism follows the Hushen 300 Index, which reflects the performance of both Shanghai and Shenzhen traded stocks.

When the index rises or falls by 5 percent, the circuit breaker imposes a 15-minute suspension in trading. If the Hushen 300 declines by over 7 percent, trading is terminated for the day.

At 1:13 p.m., trading was suspended for 15 minutes and, immediately on reopening at 1:28 p.m., the index fell a further 2 percent and trading ceased.

When trading closed, the Shanghai Composite Index was down 6.85 percent, the smaller Shenzhen index down 8.16 percent, and the ChiNext Index, China's NASDAQ-style board of growth enterprises, down 8.21 percent.

The slump is generally being attributed to weaker than expected manufacturing activity in December and a steep fall in the yuan exchange rate.
