Filmed over a period of one year, The Nurture Room accesses three schools (three of only five schools in the whole of the UK that agreed to participate in the film), and follows a handful of children as they go on their journey back to full participation in the classroom via the ‘nurture room’. This film provides an insight into the lives of troubled children within schools.

The Nurture Room covers a new approach to helping children with Additional Support Needs in the form of social, emtional and/or behavioural needs which are acting as barriers to the children's learning.

The Nurture Room is a place within the school where children can be given freedom to express themselves. The aim is to effectively address the children's needs and prevent exclusion from the classroom and any distress caused by them not having the coping skills, through no fault of their own. Primarily, these rooms hope to ensure that as few children as possible are excluded from school due to bad behaviour. By taking a proactive approach, these rooms within schools ‘nurture’ children to give them the best possible chance of coping within a mainstream classroom setting...

If you could do one thing - the most important thing - to influence the life of a young child, what would that be (it’s likely not what you first bring to mind)? We want to improve the wellbeing of children - our own, in our community, and in the world, so thinking globally about this question is vital.

Tom Weisner is an emeritus professor of anthropology and psychiatry at UCLA. He studies and teaches about culture and human development; families and children at risk; and evidence-informed policies to improve the lives of children and families. He has done research in Kenya on the effects on children and parents of rural-urban migration; in Delhi, India on families and children with autism; supports for working poor families in Wisconsin; families with children with disabilities in Los Angeles; hippie and countercultural families and children in California; sibling caretaking and education in Hawaii; non-parental and sibling caretaking around the world; and gratitude and school achievement among Latino adolescents and families in Los Angeles. He has served on the Board of the NGO ChildFund International. He went to Reed College (BA) and Harvard (PhD). He is married to Susan Meade Weisner, and has two sons and four beautiful grandchildren.

Disturbing footage of a psychopathic child cut from the 1990 documentary Child of Rage. Technically, the child is not officially a psychopath. She shows psychopathic tendencies, but this is due to her mistreatment at the hands of her parents. She actually suffers from an attachment disorder - a disorder that comes about when children such as Beth face abuse early in life.

After therapy and a great deal of love, she is now a perfectly healthy adult that works tirelessly to help others.

For those who want to learn more about the importance of love in a child's early years, I suggest that you take a look at Harlow's monkey experiments. Very similar.

Attachment is the strong bond between a child, an infant, and their caregiver. When this strong bond is broken, a child can have as a result a reactive attachment or an attachment disorder. There are many reasons that this bond can be broken. Sometimes the parent is simply unavailable. The child is not consoled when they are crying. The child's needs are not met, when they're hungry or when they're in need of a touch, a hug, a smile. Sometimes this attachment or bond is broken if a parent is unavailable. Attachment disorders and reactive attachment issues are very commonly seen in foster children or children that have been adopted. Some of the signs and symptoms of a child experiencing attachment issues include a child that is often angry; a child that has difficulty maintaining control, or wants to control many circumstances. Children with attachment issues also don't like to be physically touched, and they're not comforted by hugs or affection from their parents or caregivers. Children with attachment issues and their family need to meet with a clinical professional in order to help smooth this bond and have more...

So there's a broad range of childhood behavior disorders and the factors that cause these things come from many different sources. Some of the symptoms of childhood behavior disorders range from very subtle to very significant and very obvious to parents, teachers and siblings. Some of the causes of childhood behavior disorders include things like medical or congenital difficulties, learning disabilities, developmental delays. Often times and more often than not, I see children that are simply just reacting to something that's difficult or stressing in their environment. When we think about some of the causes of all of these things, the ideology is not clear. But one thing that's certain is that if you suspect that your child is having some type of unusual or atypical pattern or behavior, you want to look for things like difficulties and changes in their day to day behavior patterns such as difficulty sleeping or sleeping too much, increased negative reactions to small situations, moodiness, irritability, grouchiness. Your child maybe being withdrawn, isolated, changes in grades, even situations where your child's...

Could the most effective method of crime prevention be a brain scan? This suggestion, the result of recent ground-breaking research, is investigated in the two films that comprise A Mind To Crime. The Dangerous Few examines the surprising claim from the USA that it is possible to identify children as young as four year’s old as potential criminals. Often prone to violence and stealing, children who suffer from Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) have been found to have brain abnormalities consistent with those who turn to crime. Controversial treatments being developed are also revealed. Violent Minds, the second film, examines the brain abnormalities that affect different types of criminal, as well as investigating the links with drugs and the possibilities of brain damage inflicted before birth.

Are your children running the household? Take back control with these sneaky strategies from parenting experts.

Step 1: Rephrase negatives into positives
Instead of telling your child what not to do, tell them what they should do; this plants the correct action in their head. For example, saying, "Look both ways before you cross the street!" is more effective than saying, "Don't run into the street without looking!"

Step 2: Limit their choices
When you want your child to do something they may not want to do, provide a few choices. Children – like adults – tend to be more cooperative if they feel they have some control. Plus, it removes the option of refusal because you haven't asked something that can be answered with "yes" or "no."

Step 3: Use reverse psychology
Use reverse psychology by forbidding them to do something you want them to do.

Tip
Reverse psychology works best on children under age seven.

Step 4: Challenge them
Turn commands into challenges, as in, "I bet you can't eat all that broccoli."

Step 5: Add a silly element

Dr. Sarah Domoff is an Assistant Professor in Clinical Psychology at Central Michigan University. Her research examines children's use of media and mobile devices (e.g., Tablets and Smartphones). She is interested in understanding how new media use may impact children's health and development. Dr. Domoff will be presenting two of her more recent studies. The first will present the development of a new measure to assess problematic (i.e., "addictive") media use in children. The second study will describe the use of audio-recording technology to characterize parent-child interactions around media use in the home.

It's not uncommon for children of all ages to tell lies at some point in their life. Children ages three, four and even five years old will see make believe stories and want to tell tall tales, sometimes it's simply just entertaining and fun for them. As children start to grow older, adolescent age, they start to tell lies that are, more than likely, self-serving, often to get out of trouble. Children do, also, start to have a bit of confusion between a lie that gets them out of trouble versus a lie that is to protect someone's feelings.

One of the things we have to remember as parents that if children are lying very frequently and very consistently, that there may be a bigger problem that needs to be considered. Children that are lying, in addition to having other behavioral difficulties, really should be brought with their parents to meet with a clinical professional. Remember that, at some point, parents have to sit down with their children, and they have to help children understand the importance of telling the truth. And there do need to be some consequences involved in helping to steer children in the right...

Well there's a great deal of active research trying to determine the causes of autistic disorder and other pervasive developmental disorders. What we do know is that autism definitely is linked to abnormalities within the brain. And many different studies have looked at differences between the brains of children with autistic disorder and those who do not. What we do know is that there is a very strong genetic factor. And we know this based on the success we've had with twin studies. What we do know is that fraternal twins if one twin is diagnosed with autism, it's quite common for the other twin to have some sign or symptom of this pervasive developmental disorder.

We also understand this to be true, as well, from sibling studies. What we do know is that autism tends to impact males more than females, and so there's a good deal of research looking into the genetic components of parents, as well. So keep in mind there's a great deal of information and misinformation about what causes and does not cause autism. But what we do know, at this point in time, that there is a genetic link and research continues to move forward.

This film follows life inside 5 UK primary schools to uncover the enormous challenges faced by teachers dealing with violent and disruptive behaviour. 97 percent of teachers say they have to deal with disruptive pupils in their classroom – pupils like Levi in Luton, who regularly has to storm out of class for fear that he might lose control; or Jordyn in Glasgow whose swearing and aggression frightens teachers and classmates alike.

With remarkable results, we follow Levi, Jordyn and others as their schools reach out to both children and parents to address the roots of their behaviour.

In Jordyn's school she benefits from a Nurture Group, a special room set up as a bridge between home and school, where the whole spectrum of behavours that form a barrier to learning, from complete withdrawal to outright aggression, can be addressed.

And in Levi's school headteacher, Hilary Goddard puts into practice her "whole brain behaviour management in the classroom" to help both children, teachers and parents.
