It’s not quite British, and it’s not quite American – so what gives? Why do all those actors of yesteryear have such a distinct and strange accent?

If you’ve ever heard old movies or newsreels from the thirties or forties, then you’ve probably heard that weird old-timey voice.

It sounds a little like a blend between American English and a form of British English. So what is this cadence, exactly?

This type of pronunciation is called the Transatlantic, or Mid-Atlantic, accent. And it isn’t like most other accents – instead of naturally evolving, the Transatlantic accent was acquired. This means that people in the United States were taught to speak in this voice. Historically Transatlantic speech was the hallmark of aristocratic America and theatre. In upper-class boarding schools across New England, students learned the Transatlantic accent as an international norm for communication, similar to the way posh British society used Received...

You’ve probably heard various doctors extolling the health benefits of spicy food – improved circulation, weight loss, etc. – but too much spice can have drawbacks. Just ask all the people who hallucinated after eating some of the hottest peppers in the known world.

Even if you’ve never been that incapacitated, you’ve probably experienced the classic spicy food symptoms: a flushed face, watering eyes, and, perhaps grossest of all, an uncontrollably runny nose.

So what gives? Why would spicy food make your nose run?

Pop quiz hot shot. Click “like” if you’ve ever tickled an ape before. It could work, as tickling is common between many types of primates.

What about a rat? Ya ever tickled one? Then click “like” again. You’d know if you had, because rats let out these high-pitched chirps when you tickle them… kind of like “rodent laughter.”

Okay, maybe some of you Beastmasters out there have tickled both a rat and an ape. But can you tickle yourself? Probably not… because that’s kind of impossible.

Before we continue, let’s do a quick primer on how tickling works. Under your skin there are millions of nerve endings that alert your brain whenever you touch something.

A light touch -- what we usually associate with tickling -- is analyzed by two regions of your brain, the thesomatosensory cortex (which...

Imagine for a minute that you’re a pregnant woman. Still with me, guys? Now, the only way you can give birth is if you crawl into a small, cramped cave made out of chocolate. And the tunnel to this cave is so cramped that the only way you can get through is by cutting your own arms off “127 Hours” style. Once you’re in this cave you give birth! Then you eventually die from either exhaustion or starvation.

Sounds pretty grim, right? As if giving birth wasn’t difficult enough, what I just described to you is the life cycle of the fig wasp. Their role in the pollination of figs is crucial, both to the propagation of their species and the survival of fig trees.

This arrangement between wasp and plant is called “mutualism,” and it’s evolved over millions of years. Without the wasps you wouldn’t have figs. And vice versa. And yes, most of the...

Hello BrainStuff! I’m Lauren, and today we’re going to talk about the human voice – specifically, vocal fry -- the vocal register that launched a thousand panicky trend pieces.

You’ve heard it in conversation, you’ve heard people complain about it, and you very likely use at least a little bit of it yourself. But how does it actually work? What’s happening inside your throat when you fry?

To explain this, we first need to consider how we humans make sound with our voices. So, imagine you’re saying something normal, like, “Let go of my pizza, Ted, or prepare to feel the hot iron of vengeance.”

When you begin to speak -- or sing, chant, or babble -- you relax your diaphragm to push air from your lungs up through your larynx and out of your...

According to research from Johns Hopkins University, up to 90% of people in the United States habitually consume caffeine at doses that make it by far America’s most popular drug. A

Caffeine is a natural compound found in plants like cacao, coffee, and tea, and researchers think that its perky properties have made it part of humanity’s diet since before the dawn of recorded history. So let’s take a look at why it’s so popular – by delving into the chemistry of the human body.

Every cell in your body breaks down a biochemical called adenosine triphosphate, or ATP, to get the energy it needs to do stuff.
