In this talk in Berlin, Andreas looks at the inner structure of bitcoin and how high-level financial and trust applications are composed from smaller elements. Using analogies from Lego blocks to a chef creating new recipes, this talk highlights the connection between creativity and the flexibility offered by fine-grained components.

Keywords/phrases: Blocksize debate, Bitcoin scaling, consensus. Decentralized control in decision-making is not a bug, it's a feature. Segregated Witness, hard fork to 2Mb, and other optimizations.

The blocksize limit is what ensures everyone can participate in the Bitcoin network, and it ensures everyone can participate anonymously should they choose too. Some people want to remove this protection to make Bitcoin scale, but we can have the best of both worlds: high transaction volume and true decentralization with off-chain transactions. The bitcoin blocksize debate has been going for a while now. There is 2 factions that are discussing it. One side wants the blocksize to stay small, around 1 mb, and the other side wants the blocksize to increase.
Who is right, who is wrong? Well, they both have very interesting arguments and that is why the debate has been going for a while.

Just recorded a quick video with no editing to demonstrate my favorite method to subnet very quickly. In this video I assume that you have already learned subnetting so I leave out a bunch of information about the "why" behind a subnet and just teach you the method. If you do not completely understand subnetting, please watch a longer more in-depth video first!

Whether the block size should be increased to 20MB has created more controversy than any other question in Bitcoin's recent history. For some, it is an urgent and necessary step in Bitcoin's evolution. Their view is that leaving the block size at 1MB would be irresponsible inaction with potentially catastrophic consequences. Others see increasing the block size as unnecessary and a dangerous first step down a slippery slope towards a more centralized Bitcoin.
We were joined by Mike Hearn, along with Gavin Andresen the most outspoken supporter of a block size increase. He is also the creator of Bitcoin XT, a modified fork of Bitcoin Core, that may become the vehicle for the push for bigger blocks if no agreement is reached regarding Bitcoin Core. Don't miss this crucial conversation!
- What would happen if blocks started being consistently full
- Whether bigger blocks create a centralization risk
- Why Bitcoin core development has become pervaded with toxic division
- What Bitcoin XT is and how it differs from Bitcoin Core
- The roadmap ahead and how a transition to BitcoinXT would occur

Craig Wright & Jimmy Nguyen discuss how larger blocksizes, fitting more transactions, are more environmentally friendly.
"The amount of energy for mining a 1 MB block is the *same* as mining a 1 TB block, because it's the same hash puzzle. So if you have more transactions, the amount of electricity per transaction is less. So, if we want to be environmentally friendly, raise the block size."

As the debate about the blocksize continues to roar through the Bitcoin community, Gavin Andresen joins us to take a step back and ask the big questions: How should these decisions be made in the first place? What does the governance of Bitcoin look like now and what do we want it to look like in the future?
In a challenging time for Bitcoin, it's a critical discussion to have with the Chief Scientist of the Bitcoin Foundation and successor of Satoshi. We cover everything from the current blocksize debate to the nature of forks to how decisions will be made in Bitcoin XT.
Topics covered included:
- MIT Digital Currency Initiative
- The way Gavin thinks about Bitcoin
- How were decisions made throughout Bitcoin's history
- What the Nakamoto/market consensus is
- Forking the software vs a fork of the blockchain
- Who should make decisions in Bitcoin and how the interest of different stakeholders should be reconciled
- Why the desirable state is to move towards many different implementations
- How decisions will be made for the Bitcoin XT code base

Why does the bitcoin block size debate drag on? The main reason is very likely a financial incentive for miners to do nothing at all. They get paid increased transaction fees to do nothing.

With both the Bitcoin Unlimited and Segregated Witness efforts far from reaching majority support and exploding transaction fees, the debate around how to scale Bitcoin continues on. One of the key arguments against bigger blocks and Bitcoin Unlimited is that a blocksize restriction is needed to create a healthy fee market. Dr Peter Rizun has been researching the economics of transaction fees in Bitcoin extensively and joined us to discuss what dynamics affect fees and why he thinks the blocksize limit will eventually fall.
Topics discussed in this episode:
- Bitcoin seen through the eyes of a physicist
- The dynamics that determine transaction fees in Bitcoin
- How orphaning risks drive the fee market economics
- The relationship between the block reward and the fee market
- Why the blocksize limit will eventually fall
- Why Peter supports Bitcoin Unlimited
- The state of discussion between Bitcoin Core and Bitcoin Unlimited

The highly-charged debates around both Ethereum's potential hardfork and Bitcoin's block size appear different on the surface, but are caused by the same design flaw -- the lack of a cryptographic polling process. Who are the real stakeholders? What do they really think? How to proceed? No subreddit or Twitter thread can tell -- only a "decision-making engine" of sorts.

As Bitcoin grows, its blocks are starting to fill up, and thus discussion has been ongoing on how to best handle this. The block size limit is current 1mb per block, 4mb, 8mb and 20mb limits per block are being proposed- I briefly share my ideas on the topic.

"I think bitcoin is more robust because we cannot depend on Satoshi [Nakamoto, creator of bitcoin] to say, 'Hey, Satoshi, what do we do with the block size?'" says Wences Casares, founder of the bitcoin wallet Xapo. "I think that would be a weaker bitcoin."
Casares is an entrepreneur who brought the first internet service provider to his home country of Argentina and then launched the mega successful online brokerage firm Patagon. So people listen when he says that bitcoin "may change the world more than the Internet did."
Reason TV's Zach Weissmueller sat down with Casares in Xapo's San Francisco headquarters and discussed the state of bitcoin, why he believes that bitcoin's core technology needs modification to increase block size, and why such a modification doesn't threaten the future of the crypotcurrency as some critics fear. They also discussed how bitcoin can help people in developing countries to protect themselves against hyperinflation, why he believes that everyone should own a little (but not too much) bitcoin, and why Xapo stores its bitcoin private keys in vaults underneath the Swiss Alps.
Approximately 10 minutes. Shot by Paul Detrick. Produced by Zach Weissmueller. Music by Art East.

This video demonstrates how to use tune2fs and grep command on Linux to find the block size of an ext2/ext3/ext4 filesystem.
We all know that, when you want to set up quota on Linux, we need to specify the soft limit and hard limit as blocks. To do that, we must know the block size of the filesystem we are setting quota on. This video is to help you find the blocksize of an ext filesystem. So you can calculate the blocks for setting soft and hard limit for quota.
