"High" transaction fees and the future feasibility of micro-transactions. Transaction costs represent inherent real-life constraints on scalability and resource availability in the network. It costs money to host fully validating nodes. There is no such thing as a free lunch. Bitcoin was able to achieve zero-fee transactions because the cost was subsidised by the mining reward and bitcoin's value increasing at a faster rate than resources were being consumed. It is not because of the block size limit; as you scale up, the amount of competition for space will also grow. We will see increases in the block size eventually, and add second-layer systems like Lightning Network.

Bitcoin is a dynamic and evolving system and the rate of innovation has exploded over the last few years. Appointing third parties to determine which transactions are "spam" opens up opportunities for censorship. Sufficient fee is a market-based mechanism. Even if your transaction doesn't have sufficient fee at the time, it could still be confirmed later when there is less demand for the network. Transaction malleability. Segregated Witness is the best scaling that exists right now. For many miners, it represents a potential loss of profit but only if they're not willing to evolve their software and...

In this talk, Andreas looks at scaling as an ongoing process. Using examples from the history of the Internet -- which has "failed to scale, gracefully, for 25 years" --- he discusses the scaling debate and looks at how Bitcoin will scale over the next several years.

This talk took place at the Institute of Cryptoanarchy's Paralelni Polis on March 22nd 2016 in Prague, Czech Republic / Czechia.

Bitcoin scaling, on-chain vs. off-chain. Trustless second layer technologies. Lightning Network. Requiring a super-majority to make changes to the protocol, while others make trade-offs toward centralisation. Store-of-value. Different leagues of scaling and governance.

In this talk in Berlin, Andreas looks at the inner structure of bitcoin and how high-level financial and trust applications are composed from smaller elements. Using analogies from Lego blocks to a chef creating new recipes, this talk highlights the connection between creativity and the flexibility offered by fine-grained components.

Bitcoin Scalability SOLVED - Bitcoin to become "streaming money" and radically transform commerce.
- Billions of transactions per second
- 0 fees
- No Banks
- Just Hodl

The Bitcoin Lightning Network is essentially a decentralized system where users can set up trustless micropayment channels to conduct one or multiple payment transactions off-blockchain.

These channels reside outside the Bitcoin blockchain. However, once the payment channel is closed, the transactions that occurred between the channels are then broadcast, as a single transaction, to the main blockchain network. Thus, no matter the number of micro-transactions conducted, the blockchain is accessed only twice, when the channel is opened and when the channel is closed. Obviously, this approach would significantly reduce the load on the blockchain.

Presently, three teams are independently working on the LN implementation: ACINQ, Blockstream, and Lightning Labs. In early December 2017, they announced that their respective systems had completed payment tests on the main Bitcoin network. Moreover, these tests achieved interoperability across all three implantations.

Right now, to educate potential LN users, the website https://htlc.me/ allows you try a...

Keywords/phrases: Bitcoin Core roadmap, off-chain scaling solutions, Segregated Witness, user acceptance, soft forks vs. hard forks, big blocks vs. small blocks. This debate about how we scale is about prioritisation and sequencing, which one goes first. The Ethereum hard fork, 70/30 split causing replay attacks for exchanges. Hard forks are dangerous even for things everyone agrees on.

Can blockchain solve its scalability problem? Foreseeable transaction loads threaten to overwhelm the processing capacity of blockchains. This video discusses what's driving transaction loads, estimates potential loads, and discusses proposed solutions to enable greater blockchain scalability. The video discusses scalability approaches by Bitcoin, Hyperledger, Ethereum, Ripple, and R3.

Also, the video features a cameo appearance by our cat Star!

Scaling solutions, advantages and disadvantages. I won't take a position on scaling options for a simple reason: I think we will do all of them. SegWit, second layer implements like Lightning Network, increasing the base block size with 4-8 Mb of capacity, Schnorr signatures, Spoonnet. Scaling is not something that is solved once; scaling is a moving target, an aspiration. As you achieve each level of scale, that opens the door for new applications; solving current problems creates the opportunity for new problems. The internet has been failing to scale for 25 years. Email, image attachments, audio, video, high-definition video, livestreaming, holographic virtual reality, etc. We have a system that allows for global transactions, without borders, a level of planetary scale immutability. As soon as we make it faster and cheaper, people will want to put _more_ data on the blockchain. We will reach Visa scale and then surpass Visa scale on an exponential curve. We can never "fix" scaling. All we can do is hope to continue to fail to scale gracefully. Solutions that are technically sensible, maintainable, and don't violate the core principles of decentralisation. We can change the rules as often as we like, but we should not appoint rulers.

Bitcoin is in the midst of a 'civil war'. Right now the incredible uptake of bitcoin around the world is slowing down the network to a crawl. It goes against everything bitcoin is for. It needs to scale (get bigger and faster) but how can a decentralised network do it? It's no easy answer but here we have a look at what it all means.

How do the unbanked get cryptocurrencies? How will Bitcoin scale at all layers to become reliable and useful as a retail currency? It's currently the most useful for store-of-value (SoV), import/ export businesses, remittances and cross-border transactions. The SegWit soft fork was not only a block size increase and transaction malleability fix, but it also enabled second-layer solutions. Building a system that is easy to use, yet incredibly complex in the background, necessitates that we don't settle for simple answers. You don't need to understand how BGP works in order to use the internet. If you had told a person in the early 1900s that we would electrify the world, or re-pave roads to be suited for cars in a few decades, or have a real-time video conference over Skype with someone on the other side of the world, they would have written a PhD on why that was impossible. Stop only thinking about bigger 'pipes' and start making the data smaller. The scaling solutions that are being considered and developed right now will enable thousands and then millions of transactions per second in the next few years.
