Architects design the spaces in which we live, work, and play. Though not a "classical" STEM field, the field of architecture encompasses all aspects of STEM --science, technology, engineering and math, with a nice dose of art and design thrown in. The demand for architects is on the rise, and there has never been a more exciting time to enter the field. Emerging subfields in sustainability and green building place architects in a unique position to help minimize our impact on the environment.

Markers I use are here: http://thirtybyforty.com/markers/
In this video I walk you through the techniques used to generate the floor plan for a modern barn studio and currently on the boards at 30X40 Design Workshop. The project was to design an outbuilding, a folly, that is deferential to the existing structures on the property. A simple, but flexible space is required, adapting to a variety of needs from guest quarters, to play space, to gathering, and study. A scaled down barn seemed the perfect starting point, and the schemes developed show how we take the traditional notions of the barn typology and morph them into more contemporary readings.
I discuss the four plan options and two variants that were developed, describing how I arrived at each of the solutions. The video ends with a look at the SketchUp model I've created alongside the plans to begin studying the three-dimensional ramifications of the plan decisions. I use this to refine the design with my client as we move forward.
I have simple, modern house plans for download on my site: http://thirtybyforty.com/store/
Thanks for watching.

The iconic buildings of the Office for Metropolitan Architecture, OMA, and its core principles as embodied by Rem Koolhaas, have gained worldwide attention since it's foundation in 1975.
The philosophy and aesthetic developed for competition submissions for and the Centre for Art and Mediatechnology in Karlsruhe, La Villette, the Jussieu campus and the Très Grande Biblioteque in Paris, garnered frenzied international attention and were finally realised in De Kunsthal in Rotterdam.
Rem Koolhaas' intensive conceptual thinking about architecture and social circumstances ran simultaneously from the very early stages of his career. With a background in journalism and scriptwriting - his curiosity, research and urge to analyse are basics of his and OMA's working process.
It is this approach that makes him a highly debated thinker and architect - although he staunchly refutes the label "Starchitect". This image, he feels, blinds the public to a clear view of what his and OMA's work is really about.
Casa da Musica in Porto provides a valuable steppingstone for one of OMA's latest commissioned projects, the Taipei Performing Arts Centre. Treatment of form, innovative techniques, and the celebration of context are key elements of the design....
