Benjamin Staffeldt grew up on a farm and works in a garden center so when he and his wife Sara moved into a rental home (a duplex), it was only natural he'd want to start farming his (shared) backyard. They began with containers and then bought a kit greenhouse to extend the growing season and were selling to local supermarkets and restaurants, but the heating bills to farm during Wisconsin winters (with temperatures as low as -70°F) was cutting sharply into their profits.
They knew they had to maximize greenhouse space so they decided to grow vertical and to grow differently. They experimented with hydroponics and finally settled on aeroponics. "So aeroponics is similar to hydroponics using water rather than soil, but it's mist," explains Benjamin. "It's a mist that comes on inside the growing chamber, and it comes on every 3 minutes for 10 seconds, it's a really high oxygen water that's hitting that root. The method was actually developed and is being used by NASA because it uses so much less water and the speed of growth is much faster."
To fully customize the growing experience, they added a thermal wrap to their aeroponics towers which helps refract light to help keep the temperature stable within the grow chambers. They're now growing enough in their...

I show step-by-step how to design and construct a low-pressure aeroponics (soakaponics) system using free and inexpensive parts. I built mine for growing peppers, but could be used for anything. The pepper I used for testing was a Bhut Jolokia Assam.
The cost is less than 10.00 in parts, plus the submersible pump which cost me 22.42. Add 1.35 for optional sight glass components. This helps to monitor the water/nutrient level.
1 x 5' sched 40 1/2" PVC pipe - 1.92
4 x 1/2" caps - .38 each = 1.52
4 x 1/2" slip elbows - .28 each = 1.12
1 x 1/2" four-way cross tee - 1.26
2 x 90 deg tee - .35 each = .70
1 x 1/2" adapter threaded/slip - .38
1 x Eco-396 submersible pump - 22.42
15 x Spray nozzles - .13 each = 1.95
1 x Icing container - free
1 x 3" net pot -.35
1 x 2" neoprene cloning collar - .35

Its the 'age old' question, well at least its the question that the hydroponics industry has been asking for the last 5-10 years - which is better, hand watering with soil, hydroponics or aeroponics?
Well, in this video we put the question to Nico at Aquaculture who setup three identical systems in their greenhouse to see if the vegetative growth would shed some light on the question

Part one of how to build an aeroponics tower. This is built using cheap food grade components with a focus on using materials that are easily sourced or recycled.
Aeroponics uses small droplets of water and hydroponic nutrient mixed with air to maximise quantity and yield in a small area. Ideal for balcony/patio gardens, indoor or outside. Part 2 coming soon.

As urban populations continue to rise, innovators are looking beyond traditional farming as a way to feed everyone while having less impact on our land and water resources. Vertical farming is one solution that's been implemented around the world. Vertical farms produce crops in stacked layers, often in controlled environments such as those built by AeroFarms in Newark, New Jersey. AeroFarms grows a variety of leafy salad greens using a process called "aeroponics," which relies on air and mist. AeroFarms' crops are grown entirely indoors using a reusable cloth medium made from recycled plastics. In the absence of sun exposure, the company uses LED lights that expose plants to only certain types of spectrum. AeroFarms claims it uses 95% less water than a traditional farm thanks to its specially designed root misting system. And it is now building out a new 70,000 square foot facility in a former steel mill. Once completed, it's expected to grow 2 million pounds of greens per year, making it the largest indoor vertical farm in the world.

Aeroponics vertical farm - Animation 3d
Aeroponics is the process of growing plants in an air or mist environment without the use of soil or an aggregate medium (known as geoponics). The word "aeroponic" is derived from the Greek meanings of aer (ἀήρ, "air") and ponos (πόνος, "labour"). Aeroponic culture differs from both conventional hydroponics, aquaponics, and in-vitro (plant tissue culture) growing. Unlike hydroponics, which uses a liquid nutrient solution as a growing medium and essential minerals to sustain plant growth; or aquaponics which uses water and fish waste, aeroponics is conducted without a growing medium. It is sometimes considered a type of hydroponics, since water is used in aeroponics to transmit nutrients.

15-year-old Erik Meike and Briana Das, along with their 12-year-old sisters Elise and Leona, wanted to create a “No-Touch Garden”. Calling themselves “Tribe Awesome” they started tinkering with hydroponics systems. Then they discovered aeroponics, garden tech tested by NASA on the space shuttle, and after “hours and hours” of research they created an aeroponics-in-a-bucket kit that any teen could learn to make.
Aeroponics, like hydroponics, doesn’t uses soil, but unlike hydroponics which floods the system with water every few minutes, aeroponics uses a fogger to mist the roots. The Tribe Awesome teens use an ultrasonic fogger (purchased for about $25 online) to deliver what they consider the exact micron-sized droplets for their plants’ roots. Combine the fogger with a $5 bucket, a bit of foam, water and some seedlings and Tribe Awesome has what they consider future garden tech.

Aeroponics is a popular technique for small hydroponic growers, but many commercial growers face a challenge when it comes clogging. (For more free videos, check out Upstart University and start your free trial today! https://university.upstartfarmers.com/limited-trial/?ref=43)
Clogging is an issue that every grower deals with on some scale, so why is it such a problem in aeroponics?
Well, in aeroponics, the solution is sprayed directly onto the root and the fine root hairs. Because root hairs are delicate, very small droplets are required. This means using fine nozzles, which are more susceptible to clogging.
When an aeroponic dripper clogs, plants might go without solution until it is fixed. While other systems might retain a bit of moisture to tide the plant over until it is fixed, aeroponic setups often leave the plan vulnerable to temperature swings and dry roots.
Aeroponic growers have to have sophisticated filtration systems or pay the price in clogged drippers.

Chris Wrenn, VP of Sales in America for Aessense Corp. explains why his #aeroponic grow systems are the superior sustainable solution for indoor growing of cannabis and other crops. These systems allow higher yields and better quality without harming the land. IN a world with limited resources and a growing population that needs and deserves the best quality food available. Indoor farming can be done vertically and underground, saving land area and helping preserve the natural environment. Aeroponics provides excellent yields while achieving significant water savings. Micron-sized water droplets are targeted directly to plant root zones allowing maximum absorption and efficiency.
