Microsoft Access, also known as Microsoft Office Access, is a database management system from Microsoft that combines the relational Microsoft Jet Database Engine with a graphical user interface and software-development tools. It is a member of the Microsoft Office suite of applications, included in the Professional and higher editions or sold separately.

Microsoft Access stores data in its own format based on the Access Jet Database Engine. It can also import or link directly to data stored in other applications and databases.[1]

Software developers and data architects can use Microsoft Access to develop application software, and "power users" can use it to build software applications. Like other Office applications, Access is supported by Visual Basic for Applications, an object-oriented programming language that can reference a variety of objects including DAO (Data Access Objects), ActiveX Data Objects, and many other ActiveX components. Visual objects used in forms and reports expose their methods and properties in the VBA programming environment, and VBA code modules may declare and call Windows operating-system functions.Microsoft Office 2003

You are probably aware that a crosstab/pivot query results in a read-only data set. This video demonstrates a way to develop a continuous form in Access to allow the user to edit the intersecting cells. A sample file is available for download in the details below. This form also allows the columns to be dynamically generated. One data set may have 5 columns, another may have 12.

In this example we are entering a ‘Percent Complete’ value for project discipline scope (rows) against multiple deliverables (columns). Through a temporary table I am denormalizing the data in the form of a crosstab and dynamically displaying the column headings and subtotal rows. When the user hits "Save" the temp table is converted into a normalized table and then the main tables are updated.

I presented this to an online group of professional Access developers. About halfway...

Access 2010 includes a new navigation control that you can use to add a traditional tab-based navigation model to your database. This is particularly helpful if you are publishing the database to a SharePoint server, as a navigation form serves as the "home page" for your database.
