Today we’re going to discuss how 3D graphics are created and then rendered for a 2D screen. From polygon count and meshes, to lighting and texturing, there are a lot of considerations in building the 3D objects we see in our movies and video games, but then displaying these 3D objects of a 2D surface adds an additional number of challenges. So we’ll talk about some of the reasons you see occasional glitches in your video games as well as the reason a dedicated graphics processing unit, or GPU, was needed to meet the increasing demand for more and more complex graphics.

Today we cover how we can use Perlin noise to generate terrain and why this technique is really well-suited for a giant game like No Man's Sky. No matter what people think of the quality of the game, or the marketing, or whatever, I hope the buzz can at least motivate everyone to think "Hmm, I could do ___ better than that!" and continue pursuing procedural storytelling and world creation in games. And perhaps this video could be a starting point :)

I was going to do a coding example, but Red Blob Games does it much better: http://www.redblobgames.com/maps/terrain-from-noise

The AI challenge is also extended for another month! If this is the future and you've missed it, there's a new theme every few months so feel free to submit for whatever's currently going!

You also may want to pause the video at certain points to double-check my calculations. Doing the calculations is the best way to solidify your understanding of the concepts, but the even BETTER way is to implement them in code. The game dev challenge will be posted on the subreddit within the next day of this video's upload time, and I'll be streaming my code throughout the week.

I try to stream every day at 10PM CST, but I may be changing my schedule to accommodate the fact that ~50% of my viewers are on the other side of the planet, and not in the cornfields of the...

I attempt to honor Satoru Iwata's programming skills with a brief overview of computer architecture and Gameboy development. This one is a lot more dense and complicated, but that's exactly what the subject matter is! Simple pieces, but a ridiculously complex whole. Even if none of this makes sense, I hope everyone finds Iwata and the Gameboy to be crazier and cooler than you thought.

Also, I thought this was cool. The mappings of the RAM in the games: http://datacrystal.romhacking.net/wiki/Pok%C3%A9mon_Gold:RAM_map
