I filmed a video back in June (about 4 months ago) where I showed how a 4'x10' potato garden could be built and planted in 6 minutes using the Ruth Stout method. In this video I follow up with a harvest of one of those gardens. I think you will like the results! Thanks for watching, and if you enjoyed this content, please share and/or subscribe to my channel. You can also check out my podcast (http://maritimegardening.com) where I discuss how to grow healthy food in your backyard cheaply and easily. Special thanks to Audionautix.com for the music ("pioneer" and "panama hat" ).

For three years now I have planted my garden in February...in freezing temperatures and without a greenhouse half the time. This year without a greenhouse in the 20's Fahrenheit we even have basil still alive in the hotbed!!!! So far I am planting seedlings to experiment with the Tulsa temperatures and wind...not all of my plantings because this is a new area for me. The comfrey is in the low beds as well as most of the snow peas. If I put bare seeds in the planting bed the heat from the decomposing mulch will actually cook them. Once the bed cools down a little I can plant in. What I can put in is the cardboard box transplants....the box leaves enough space between the heat and the seeds that nothing dies! If you want to do a Back to Eden garden without weeds this is the way to do it!

It is possible and easy to harvest good vegetables in your kitchen garden, without the bother of digging the soil.
The secret? Let the earthworms and their friends do this work naturally, and not destroy their habitat by turning over the soil.
All pleasures of the garden, without tiring yourself!
This LIVING SOIL method, when applied to the kitchen garden, produces healthy vegetables in large quantities, without exertion, and WITHOUT ANY WORKING OF THE SOIL.
Without digging, ploughing, raking or hoeing. Without weeding, and with a lot less watering!
Developed and presented by Dominique SOLTNER, this other kind of gardening encourages natural organic activity, which efficiently carries out the working of the soil and nourishes the plants perfectly at the same time.
Without fertiliser and without pesticides, it can be used on all types...

Turning an uncultivated plot with many perennial weeds, into an abundant garden using the no-dig approach. all within a few months in 2013. I describe the process in detail in "How to Create a New Vegetable Garden", pub. Green Books 2014.
To see how the garden evolved over the next few years. we made another video in July 2016 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QVY4SJt4mzg. Notice how there is no cardboard or polythene! All perennial weeds have died, including the bindweed.
And this video is Homeacres no dig garden in August 2017 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qFT4O51DuQY.

Get rid of your compost bin with this simple compost system using deep mulch in the garden. Garden author Doug Green shows you a no-work system for making great compost and making your soil much better.
I got the idea to do this from Ruth Stout in her gardening book "The No-Work Garden Book" back in the 1970's and have been using it on and off over the years. Now my heirloom vegetable expert partner and I deep mulch our entire vegetable garden so it's fitting to go back to this tried and true easy system. That and the fact that neither of us is getting any younger and both of us would rather avoid shoveling as much as possible. I like it because there's no need to make compost tea or work a compost tumbler with this simple system. It's great for worms and one of the easiest compost systems for beginners you can imagine.
